In a system for analyzing the elemental or molecular composition of a sample where the sample components are excited through collision with an active metastable gaseous species, the excited sample components emitting a characteristic wavelength of light which may be detected, the system including a microwave cavity through which the gaseous species flows and a microwave source coupled to the cavity, the microwave discharge exciting the gaseous species, there is disclosed an improved gas and sample introduction system wherein a liquid sample and a water soluble compound are mixed with a diluent and aspirated into the flow, upstream of the microwave cavity, onto a heated filament, the compound being capable of releasing nitrogen or some other suitable gas molecules at high temperature and low pressure whereupon formation of nitrogen and vaporization of the sample occur simultaneously.

Method of generating nitrogen for flameless emission spectroscopy

In a system for analyzing the elemental or molecular composition of a sample wherein the sample components are excited through collision with an active metastable gaseous species, the excited sample components emitting a characteristic wavelength of light which may be detected, the system including a microwave cavity through which the gaseous species flows and a microwave source coupled to the cavity, the microwave discharge exciting the gaseous species, there is disclosed an improved liquid sample introduction system which causes complete vaporization and disassociation of the sample. The sample is preferably aspirated directly into the microwave discharge within which the active gas is generated. A novel sample and gas injection probe is also disclosed.

Sample introduction system for flameless emission spectroscopy

A system for the detection of precipitate-forming antigens by means of the reaction with their corresponding antibodies is disclosed. The reaction of precipitate-forming antigens with their respective antibodies produces a precipitate in proportion to either the antibody concentration or the antigen concentration, depending on which is present in excess. The method does not require formation of actual precipitate, but measures the formation of 'scattering centers' -- i.e., molecular aggregates of sufficient size to produce measurable scatter of light. The quantity of scattering centers formed is measured by nephelometric means and the measuring system performs an immunonephelometric analysis. In particular, the rate of change of the nephelometric signal with respect to time is measured and the peak rate and time to the peak rate established. From these simultaneous measurements both the antigen/antibody concentration and the condition of antibody or antigen excess are determined.

System for rate immunonephelometric analysis

A signal conditioning circuit for extracting unipolar noise from an analog input signal by isolating the unipolar noise component and subtracting it from the input signal. The circuit includes a coupling capacitor receiving the analog signal and an ideal clamp connected to the capacitor output terminal to clamp the capacitor to an edge of the unipolar noise signal. The capacitor is thus prevented from charging toward a level representing an average value of the unipolar noise and hence functions to pass the noise undistorted for subtraction from the analog input signal. The clamp comprises an operational amplifier having a first input terminal connected to the capacitor output terminal and a second input terminal connected to a source of reference voltage. A diode is connected in a feedback path between an output terminal of the amplifier and the first input terminal thereof.

Signal conditioning circuit

A system for chemically analyzing antigens or antibodies by initiating an antigen-antibody reaction in a reaction zone and measuring the light scattered by a precipitate produced by the reaction to determine the antigen or antibody concentration. In order to signal the start of the reaction, a fluorescent tagging substance is included with at least the last antigen or antibody reaction component introduced into the reaction zone. The fluorescent tagging substance does not enter into the antigen-antibody reaction and is selected to emit light in a bandwidth spectrally separated from the light scattered by the precipitate. The reaction zone is monitored for the presence of the tagging substance, and when the substance is detected a trigger signal is generated to signal the start of the reaction. By including a tagging substance with each component of the reaction and by monitoring the reaction zone for the presence of each tagging substance, a trigger signal is generated only if each reaction component is present.

Method and apparatus for signalling the introduction of chemical

A film badge sensitive to non-ionizing radiation and a method of making same. The film badge consists of dissolved bilirubin bound in a polymeric film base and sealed within an optically transparent substrate. The film badge is useful during phototherapy for the treatment of hyperbilirubinemia in the newborn and is capable of measuring the total irradiance effective in decomposing bilirubin.

Photodosimeter film badge

A densitometer for providing an output which is a function of the density of a film badge in a photodosimeter system. The light passing through the film badge is received by a photodiode which generates a current signal which is directly proportional to the intensity of the received light. The current signal is converted to a voltage signal, the converting means being biased so that the voltage signal is zero when no light is received by the photodiode. The voltage signal is applied, together with a reference voltage, to a log-ratio circuit which generates an output signal proportional to the log of the ratio of the reference voltage to the voltage signal, the output of the log-ratio circuit being displayed. A circuit is operative, when the film badge is removed from the light path, to adjust the reference voltage until the output of the log-ratio circuit is zero.
