A touch sensor comprises a substrate capable of propagating acoustic waves and includes a first surface having a touch sensitive region. A first sidewall intersects the first surface along a first edge. The first edge is configured to propagate a first acoustic wave along the first edge. The first acoustic wave may be a one-dimensional edge wave. A wave converter converts the first acoustic wave to a second acoustic wave, and the first surface is configured to propagate the second acoustic wave across the touch sensitive region.

A touch sensor having an acoustic substrate, an acoustic transducer, and an acoustically diffractive grating is provided. The grating is disposed between the transducer and the substrate, so that acoustic energy from the transducer is coupled to an acoustic wave propagating along the surface of the substrate. If used in a display device, the combination of the transducer and grating may provide a low profile that allows the assembly to be more easily placed between the acoustic substrate and a bezel placed in front of the substrate. No acoustic components need be mounted on the rear surface of the substrate, allowing the acoustic substrate to be formed on the front surface of the display device.

The present invention is directed to a multilayer substrate for use in touchscreen and touch sensor applications. The substrate, including a microsheet, a polymer sheet, and a plate supports the propagation of acoustic waves, including Love waves and Rayleigh-like waves. The microsheet and plate may be fabricated from glass, metal, or other suitable materials depending on the desired application for the touchscreen. The polymer sheet may be fabricated from polystyrene, polyacrylates, polyether sulfones, or polycyclic olefins. The disclosed touchscreen substrates are thin but durable and have increased touch sensitivity with decreased sensitivity to water and other surface contaminants.

A method and apparatus for adapting an acoustic touchscreen controller to the operating frequency requirements of a specific touchscreen are provided. The adaptive controller can either utilize look-up tables to achieve the desired output frequency or the it can use a multi-step process in which it first determines the frequency requirements of the touchscreen, and then adjusts the burst frequency characteristics, the receiver circuit center frequency, or both in accordance with the touchscreen requirements. In one embodiment, the adaptive controller compensates for global frequency mismatch errors. In this embodiment a digital multiplier is used to modify the output of a crystal reference oscillator. The reference oscillator output is used to control the frequency of the signal from the receiving transducers and/or to generate the desired frequency of the tone burst sent to the transmitting transducers. In another embodiment that is intended to compensate for both global and local frequency variations, the adaptive controller uses a digital signal processor. The digital signal processor, based on correction values contained in memory, defines a specific center frequency which preferably varies according to the signal delay, thus taking into account variations caused by localized variations in the acoustic wave reflective array. In yet another embodiment, a non-crystal local oscillator is used to provide the reference signal in the adaptive controller. The use of such an oscillator allows the controller to be miniaturized to a sufficient extent that it can be mounted directly to a touchscreen substrate. A feedback loop is used to compensate for oscillator drift. A discriminator circuit determines the degree of deviation from the desired frequency. The output from the discriminator is used to adjust the frequency of the local oscillator such that it tracks the frequency of the touchscreen.

Adaptive frequency touchscreen controller using intermediate-frequency signal processing

An acoustic touch sensing device, comprising a substrate, having a surface; and an acoustic wave transducer, transducing a bulk wave in said substrate propagating through said substrate along an axis intersecting said surface, wherein energy of said bulk wave is coupled to a wave having a converted wave mode with appreciable energy at said surface and propagating along said surface. The device may include a set of scattering centers to couple the bulk wave to a Rayleigh wave or plate wave. The Rayleigh wave or plate wave may be dispersed over a region of the substrate, and analyzed to detect a perturbation indicative of a position of touch.

An electroluminescent display is formed from a matrix of organic based light emitting diodes (LEDs) backed by an array of low resistance, high amperage conductors joined to the LED matrix at many points, in order to ensure low voltage drops along each line in line-at-a-time operation of the display. A method of joining the current carrying conductors to the matrix so as not to disturb the LED assembly through mechanical stress is also disclosed.

An improved cathode ray tube yoke assembly and cathode ray tube system is capable of reducing or eliminating cathode ray tube geometrical image distortions caused by an inherent non-linear relationship between magnetic deflection fields inside the tube and electron beam spot deflection. The yoke assembly comprises horizontal and vertical windings for producing horizontal and vertical deflection fields and one or more non-linear magnetic elements. The magnetic elements produce a non-linear relationship between driving currents and magnetic deflection fields inside the tube which substantially compensates for the inherent non-linear relationship between deflection fields and electron beam spot deflection. In the preferred embodiment, the inductances of the yoke windings remain constant during operation.
