A liquid spraying system having an electrically operated pulse width modulation control for directing a modulated liquid discharge based upon frequency and duty cycle of a reciprocally operated liquid control valve. The spray nozzle assembly includes a nozzle body having an inwardly converging conical chamber communicating between an upstream liquid directing plate and a downstream liquid discharge passage. The liquid directing plate is formed with a one or more rings of circumferentially spaced liquid directing passages angularly oriented with respect to a central liquid flow axis of the nozzle body for directing liquid discharging from said nozzle body discharge passage into a predetermined conical spray pattern.

A spray nozzle of a fire protection system is provided for discharging a hollow cone spray pattern. The nozzle generally includes a hollow, elongated body and an integral core subassembly which may be preassembled. The integral subassembly configuration simplifies the subsequent assembly, disassembly or service of the overall nozzle in the field. In an exemplary embodiment, the subassembly includes a unitary core holder having a plate portion and an annular wall portion, with a discharge orifice disposed centrally in the plate portion. Additionally, the subassembly includes a disc-shaped core having a plurality of sloped passages. The core and core holder are cooperatively shaped to define generally cylindrical a whirl chamber in a space between a downstream surface of the core and the plate portion of the core holder. For fixing the core and core holder together, the core holder includes a lip which projects around the annular wall, the lip being deformed by a peening operation to extend partially over an upstream surface of the core. The integral, preassembled core subassembly is mounted to the discharge end of the nozzle body. When fluid is delivered to the nozzle, the fluid passes through the nozzle body, the sloped passages, whirl chamber, and discharges from the orifice in a hollow cone pattern.

A flighted, horizontally inclined rotary retort, heated externally by flame, hot gases, steam or other sources of heat. The retort shall have sufficient flight area to transport the coal through the retort in the predetermined time. The coal being processed in this retort is prevented from becoming exothermic by provision for a countercurrent flow of blanket gas, heated to a predetermined temperature below exotherm, to prevent coal surface temperatures from rising above the ignition temperature. The retort accommodates oversize pieces of raw coal by having alternating long and short flights, thus allowing greater space between long flights and allowing the larger pieces to be carried over the center pipe by the wiping action of the long flights. The retort will also be provided with an internal pipe, mounted on the center line of the shell. This pipe will be provided with the means for installation of thermocouples at regular intervals thereon in order to measure the surface temperature of the fuel in process. The temperature signals received from the thermocouples are used to control the heating rate and/or feed rate of the coal, or the speed of rotation of the retort.

A high-pressure spray nozzle includes a nozzle body with a longitudinal channel formed therein that provides a fluid passageway between an inlet and a mouth zone. The passageway has an inner configuration that includes a shoulder with a generally radiused portion that enables increased force and a more even spray distribution for fluid exiting the mouth zone.

A controllable spray nozzle assembly with an elongated discharge passageway is provided with a short discharge orifice and valve seat insert element that is made separately for ease and accuracy of providing its orifice and valve seat and is mounted in sliding sealing relation with the outlet end of the passageway. A valve needle extends into the passageway and is selectively movable along the passageway for shut-off and/or flow rate control of the spray flow by the related axial positioning of its seat end relative to the separate discharge orifice and valve seat element that is inserted at the outlet end of the passageway. The separate discharge element has an external configuration that conforms to a portion of the nozzle body adjacent the outlet end for such seating thereon. The element's internal configuration defines a small discharge orifice through the element and a valve seat around the inner end of that orifice in opposed relation to the seat on the valve needle. The configuration and seating relation of the discharge element on the nozzle body assure that the orifice and the valve seat of the element are coaxially aligned with the adjacent end of the valve needle. The needle and its drive bushing preferably are made in one piece. Atomizing fluid is supplied through a plurality of bores through the nozzle body around the discharge passageway. These bores may be of reduced cross-section adjacent the outlet, which affords greater strength in this area of the assembly.

A method of treating coal. The method comprises passing the coal through a retort having a shell temperature of about 500.degree.-1000.degree. F. and shock heating the coal to a maximum surface temperature of about 500.degree.-1000.degree. F. without allowing the coal to become exothermic. The coal is prevented from going exothermic by a combination of factors, including the evaporation of moisture from the shock heated coal, the tendency of coal to absorb heat and maintain a temperature of about 390.degree.-570.degree. F. until the coal undergoes molecular transformation of complex hydrocarbons contained in the coal to simpler forms, and the effects of a cooling blanket gas passed through the shock heated coal. The blanket gas preferably comprises an oxygen lean blanket gas stream containing about 2-8% oxygen by volume. The treated coal exhibits extremely low moisture content and increased BTU value and other improved combustion characteristics.

A reversible spray tip assembly having a housing formed with a longitudinal bore and a transverse bore, a cylindrical turret having a spray tip orifice rotatably and removably supported in the transverse housing bore, and a floating seal disposed in the longitudinal housing bore and having a concave sealing face adapted for sealing engagement with the turret. The spray tip assembly includes a seal adaptor disposed in the longitudinal housing bore upstream of the floating seal which, upon securement of the spray tip assembly onto a supply line by a threaded coupling, causes the seal to be forced into predetermined initial sealing contact with the turret regardless of how tightly the coupling is screwed onto the supply line.
