A fluid replacement method including: determining the amount of urine expelled by a patient; infusing via a pump fluid from a first fluid source into a patient; determining an amount of fluid infused into the patient from the first fluid source; adjusting the operating of the pump based on the determined amount of urine expelled and the amount of fluid infused into the patient; setting a desired fluid balance for the patient; setting an amount of at least one additional fluid delivered to the patient; calculating an actual fluid balance based on the determined urine output, the determined amount of fluid infused from the first fluid source, and the set amount of said at least one additional fluid delivered; and automatically controlling the pump based on the actual fluid balance and the set desired fluid balance so the actual fluid balance conforms to the desired fluid balance.

Fluid replacement device

A fluid replacement method including: determining the amount of urine expelled by a patient; infusing via a pump fluid from a first fluid source into a patient; determining an amount of fluid infused into the patient from the first fluid source; adjusting the operating of the pump based on the determined amount of urine expelled and the amount of fluid infused into the patient; setting a desired fluid balance for the patient; setting an amount of at least one additional fluid delivered to the patient, wherein the at least one additional fluid is not pumped into the patient; calculating an actual fluid balance based on the determined urine output, the determined amount of fluid infused into the patient from the first fluid source, and the set amount of said at least one additional fluid delivered to the patient; and automatically controlling the pump based on the actual fluid balance and the set desired fluid balance so the actual fluid balance conforms to the desired fluid balance.

A console includes a weighing subsystem responsive to a first fluid source and a urine collection chamber. A pump infuses fluid from the first fluid source into a patient. A processing subsystem is responsive to the weighing subsystem. Based on the weight of the first fluid source and of the urine collection chamber, urine output and amount of fluid infused into the patient from the first fluid source are determined. A user can set a desired fluid balance and the amount of at least one additional fluid delivered. An actual fluid balance is calculated based on the determined urine output, the determined amount of fluid infused from the first fluid source, and the set amount of the additional fluid delivered. The pump is controlled based on actual fluid balance and set desired fluid balance so actual fluid balance becomes the same or approximately the same as the desired fluid balance.

A hydration management system includes a console for mounting on an IV pole. A urine collection bag and a hydration fluid bag hang from the console. Urine in the urine collection bag is weighed. An infusion pump is configured to pump hydration fluid from the infusion bag. A controller is responsive to the weight of the urine collection bag and controls the infusion pump to hydrate the patient based on the patient's urine output. An infusion set includes an infusion bag connector, an IV needle connector, and tubing, placed in the infusion pump, extending between the infusion bag connector and the IV needle connector. A urine collection set typically includes the urine collection bag, a catheter connector, and tubing extending between the urine collection bag connector and the catheter connector.

Patient connection system for a balance hydration unit

A patient hydration system with an infusion subsystem responsive to a source of hydration fluid for infusing the patient with hydration fluid. A urine output measurement subsystem determines the amount of urine output by the patient. A setting is received corresponding to an amount of urine to be output by the patient. When or after the urine output measurement subsystem indicates the set amount of urine has been output by the patient, the infusion subsystem is controlled to administer hydration fluid to the patient based on the patient's further urine output.

Patient hydration monitoring and maintenance system and method for use with administration of a diuretic

A patient hydration system with a patient urine output measurement device, a hydration fluid administration subsystem, and a controller, responsive to the patient urine output measurement device. The controller is configured to control the hydration fluid administration subsystem to administer hydration fluid to the patient to prevent dehydration of the patient. A hydration sensor is also included to detect at least one patient parameter indicative of the patient's hydration state.

A patient hydration system with an infusion subsystem which infuses fluid into a patient and a urine output measurement subsystem for measuring the amount of urine output by the patient. A controller is configured to control the infusion subsystem and is responsive to the urine output measurement subsystem. The controller includes a balancing function which controls the infusion subsystem to administer fluid infused into the patient to balance the urine output with the fluid infusion. The controller also includes a taper down function which controls the infusion subsystem to administer fluid infused into the patient at a rate less than the rate of urine output by the patient.

A heart-synchronized pulsed laser system includes a laser; means for sensing the contraction and expansion of a beating heart to be synchronized with the laser; means, responsive to the means for sensing, for generating a trigger pulse; means for positioning the leading edge of the trigger pulse; means for positioning the leading edge of the trigger pulse during the contraction and expansion cycle of the heartbeat; means for defining the width of the trigger pulse to occur during the heartbeat cycle; and means responsive to the trigger pulse for firing the laser to strike the beating heart at the time indicated by the trigger pulse position and for the period indicated by the width of the trigger pulse. In addition, the invention feature a handpiece for a medical laser system comprising a barrel for having a passage for transmitting a laser beam and a contacting wall on one end of said barrel including an aperture in communication with the passage, a solid face extending radially outward from the aperture to the periphery of said contacting wall, and a knurled surface on the face for preventing movement of the contacting wall with respect to the heart wall during surgery.

Heart synchronized pulsed laser system

A myocardial revascularization system that includes a laser energy source (e.g., a semiconductor laser), an outer guide member providing access to a patient's heart, and an optical fiber. The optical fiber is coupled to receive laser energy pulses from the source, is slidably located within the guide member, and is extendible from the distal end of the guide member. A drive motor is connected to the fiber to automatically move the distal end of the optical fiber with respect to the distal end of the guide member. A controller controls the drive motor to automatically move the fiber in synchronism with firing of the laser energy, and automatically calibrates the position of the distal end of the fiber with respect to the distal end of the catheter. The fiber has, at its tip, an enlargened portion with a front surface coated with a heat absorbing material that is nonmetallic and is partially transparent to the pulses. The outer guide member is French or smaller and has a deflectable distal end. A lubricant is located between the optical fiber and an inner lumen surface of the guide member and on the outer surface of the outer guide member. Position sensing components are carried by the optical fiber and outer guide member at or near their distal ends.

Myocardial revascularization

A myocardial revascularization system that includes a laser energy source (e.g., a semiconductor laser), an outer guide member providing access to a patient's heart, and an optical fiber. The optical fiber is coupled to receive laser energy pulses from the source, is slidably located within the guide member, and is extendible from the distal end of the guide member.
