Azuvirin peptides are small peptide agents useful in delivering functional moieties, such as sensitizers, chemotherapeutic agents and the like to cancer cells expressing ephrin receptors. The peptides are also useful for administration to a patient suffering from a viral infection, or to an individual facing exposure to a viral infection, especially one caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-1).

Azuvirin peptides

Retrocyclin peptides are small antimicrobial agents with potent activity against bacteria and viruses. The peptides are nonhemolytic, and exhibit minimal in vitro cytotoxicity. A pharmaceutical composition comprising retrocyclin as an active agent is administered therapeutically to a patient suffering from a bacterial and/or viral infection, or to an individual facing exposure to a bacterial and/or viral infection, especially one caused by the HIV-1 retrovirus or other sexually-transmitted pathogens.

Retrocyclins: antiviral and antimicrobial peptides

A method of playing an entertainment game includes selecting a lead participant who is required to perform at least one qualifying action in a first level of play. The present invention relates to the use of antimicrobial peptides in the inhibition of microbial growth and proliferation. Novel antimicrobial truncated peptides are disclosed which are based upon SMAP 29 and RCAP 18, but which contain a lesser number of amino acid residues yet still retain bactericidal activity. In addition, synthetic peptides based upon the SMAP 29 protein are disclosed which have fewer amino acid residues and include substitutions yet retain substantial activity. The invention also relates to a method of inhibiting microbial growth by administering an effective amount of a peptide in accordance with the invention, or by combining the peptides with other antimicrobial agents or antibiotics.

The present invention provides a new class of broad-spectrum antimicrobial peptides effective against a wide variety of microbes, including bacteria, viruses, retroviruses, fungi, yeast and protozoa.

Parevins and tachytegrins

Peptide-based compounds containing four invariant cysteine residues which have been optionally oxidized to contain two intramolecular disulfide bonds, or modified forms where the cysteines are replaced are useful as preservatives and in preventing, treating, or ameliorating viral or microbial infection in animals and plants, and in inactivating endotoxin.

Protegrins

Novispirin peptides are antimicrobial agents with potent activity against Gram-negative bacteria. The peptides are nonhemolytic, exhibit reduced in vitro cytotoxicity relative to other antimicrobial peptides, and were well-tolerated in vivo after intravenous injection. Novispirins also bind lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a property that may mitigate symptoms associated with Gram-negative bacterial infection. A pharmaceutical composition comprising novispirin as an active agent is administered to a patient suffering from or predisposed to a microbial infection, particularly Gram-negative bacterial infections.

A filter for the adsorption of ingredients from and/or the dispersion of ingredients into a fluid includes a matrix which has a plurality of particles having an inherently active surface or an active surface made of a fluid treating material. The particles are held in place by a moderately viscous binder which is impervious to the flow of the fluid. The particles, however, are made of a fluid pervious material. An insufficient amount of binder is incorporated in the matrix to otherwise completely cover the particles. Thus portions of the active surface of the particles remains exposed to the flow of fluid thereby resulting in tortuous paths of flow through the matrix, thereby assuring contact with the treating particles.
