A method of making a thermoplastic composition comprises melt extruding a poly(arylene ether) powder to form a first pelletized poly(arylene ether); and melt extruding the first pelletized poly(arylene ether) to form a second pelletized poly(arylene ether), wherein the second pelletized poly(arylene ether) has a level of butyraldehyde less than the first pelletized poly(arylene ether) and the second pelletized poly(arylene ether) has a level of trimethylanisole less than the first pelletized poly(arylene ether).

Method of making poly(arylene ether) compositions

A fiber comprises a composition including a poly(phenylene ether) having less than or equal to 240 parts per million by weight of hydroxyl groups associated with ethylene bridge groups and less than or equal to 800 parts per million by weight of hydroxyl groups associated with rearranged backbone groups, both amounts based on the weight of the poly(phenylene ether). Fiber of low denier can be formed from this composition. The fiber can be formed by melt spinning.

Poly(phenylene ether) fiber and method of making

The disclosure relates to a steam stripping process for producing purified polyimides, e.g., polyetherimide homopolymers and polyetherimide copolymers. The process can include contacting an initial polyimide with steam to remove a volatile species from the initial polyimide to produce a purified polyimide. The purified polyimide can have a weight average molecular weight of from 5,000 to 80,000 Daltons. The weight average molecular weight of the purified polyimide can be greater than or equal to 90% of the weight average molecular weight of the initial polyimide. The purified polyimide can have less than 44 ppm of a volatile species, having a molecular weight of less than 250 Daltons. The polyimide can have less than 10 ppm of a metal cation.

A halogen-free electrically insulating film is prepared from a composition including particular amounts of a poly(arylene ether), a hydrogenated block copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic compound and a conjugated diene, and a triaryl phosphate. The electrically insulating film may be prepared by an extrusion and/or calendering method. Uses of the electrically insulating film include, for example, shielding applications in power supply housing, printed circuit board insulation, backlit aircraft in flight panels and displays, business equipment insulation, computer rack partitions, and television and monitor insulation.

A method of making a thermoplastic composition comprises melt mixing a concentrate comprising a first thermoplastic, a second thermoplastic and an additive with a component selected from the group consisting of a third thermoplastic, fire retardant additive, reinforcing agent, electrically conductive filler, non-electrically conductive filler and combinations of two or more of the foregoing.

A conductive composition comprises a poly(arylene ether), a polyamide, a conductive additive, and an impact modifier, wherein the composition demonstrates less than or equal to 0.0150 grams of composition buildup on the die face per minute of running time per meter of die opening perimeter after extruding the composition at a steady state for five minutes.

Poly(arylene ether)/polyamide composition

A poly(arylene ether)/polystyrene blend may be prepared by melt kneading a carboxylic acid compound, a poly(arylene ether), and a polystyrene to form an intimate blend, and steam stripping the intimate blend, where melt kneading is conducted with a specific energy consumption of about 0.1 to about 0.3 kilowatt-hour per kilogram of blend. The method allows the formation of an intimate resin blend while minimizing the styrene monomer content of the final blend.

A composition comprises poly(arylene ether), a rubber modified poly(alkenyle aromatic) resin, and an unsaturated impact modifier. The composition may further comprise an encapsulated fluoropolymer. The melt strength of the composition, measured as the hang time of an extruded tube, is especially suited for blow molding methods. The composition exhibits good melt strength, surface quality and/or sandability and is particularly useful in blow molding applications.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method for a thermoplastic resin composition, composed of a polyphenylene ether and a polyamide, having an electric conductivity, and excellent in balance of fluidity and impact strength, by producing with a specific process, and to provide the thermoplastic resin composition obtained thereby. SOLUTION: The thermoplastic resin composition is composed of the following component (A)-(E), wherein a weight ratio of (A)/(B) is 5/95-70/30, an amount of (C) is effective to phase-solvate (A) and (B), the amount of (D) is 0.8-10 pts.wt. per the total 100 pts.wt. of (A) and (B), and the amount of component (E) is 5-40 pts.wt. per the total 100 pts.wt. of (A) and (B). The production method for the thermoplastic resin composition is provided. (A): a polyphenylene ether, (B): a polyamide. (C): a phase-solvating agent, (D): an electrically conductive carbon black and/or a fine fibrous carbon, and (E) an improving agent for shock resistance.

Methods of preparing a polymeric material composite

A poly(arylene ether)-polyolefin composition is prepared by melt-blending a poly(arylene ether), a poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin, a hydrogenated block copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic compound and a conjugated diene, and an unhydrogenated block copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic compound and a conjugated diene to form a first blend, and melt-blending the first blend and a polyolefin and additional hydrogenated block copolymer to form a second blend. A reinforcing filler and/or an ethylene/alpha-olefin elastomeric copolymer may, optionally, be added during formation of the second blend or in an additional step. Multiple mixing elements, low throughput, and high extruder rotations per minute may be used to achieve high energy mixing of the first and second blends. Compositions prepared by the method exhibit an improved balance of impact strength, stiffness, and heat resistance, as well as reduced variability of physical properties.
