This invention is in the general field of surgical instruments. It relates specifically to catheters which may be used in cardiovascular and endovascular procedures to deliver diagnostic, therapeutic, or vaso-occlusive agents to a target site within a human or animal body which is accessible by a system of natural passageways within that body. The catheters are coated in such a way that they are exceptionally slippery and the coating is very durable. The invention also relates to methods of coating the catheters and to methods of applying lubricious coatings.

Lubricious catheters

This is a medical device for forming an embolism within the vasculature of a patient. More particularly, it is a vaso-occlusion device at least partially coated with a bioactive agent, a collagenous material, or a collagenous coating optionally containing or coated with other bioactive agents. A coated vaso-occlusive device which is highly flexible is also a variation.

Bioactive coating for vaso-occlusive devices

This is a percutaneous medical device and related methods for its use. More particularly, it is a percutaneous catheter having ends which are interchangeably capable both of distal introduction into a delivery device lumen or body space and of proximal coupling to other medical devices.

Bi-directional catheter

This invention is in the general field of surgical instruments. It relates specifically to catheters which may be used in cardiovascular and endovascular procedures to deliver diagnostic, therapeutic, or vaso-occlusive agents to a target site within a human or animal body which is accessible by a system of natural passageways within that body. The catheters are coated in such a way that they are exceptionally slippery and the coating is very durable. The invention also relates to methods of coating the catheters and to methods of applying lubricious coatings by forming a sheet of the coating on the substrate and simultaneously drying and crosslinking through heat and radiation.

This invention relates to a new technique for preparing metal devices such as guidewires for the subsequent attachment of hydrophilic coatings. The invention also relates to guidewires and other devices made according to that method. In one embodiment of the method of this invention, a hydrocarbon residue undercoat is applied to a metal guidewire core by plasma deposition. A photoactive hydrophilic polymer is then deposited on the hydrocarbon residue coating and activated by ultraviolet light. The hydrocarbon residue coating acts as a tie layer between the hydrophilic polymer and the metal guidewire core apparently by providing C--C bonds for the covalent linking of the coating material to the tie layer. The resulting article of this invention is a guidewire having the maneuverability of a metal guidewire and the biocompatibility of a lubricious, hydrophilic polymer.

Method of pretreating metal surfaces for subsequent polymer coating

This invention relates to infusion catheters that are used in cardiovascular and endovascular procedures to deliver diagnostic, therapeutic or vasoocclusive agents to a target site (the target site being accessible by a tortuous path through the vasculature). In particular, the invention relates to flow-directed catheters which have been coated on their interior or exterior surfaces with a cross-linkable lubricious polymer and to the method of making those catheters. The invention also relates to the process of using the infusion catheter.

Lubricious flow directed catheter

This invention is a surgical device. In particular, it is a catheter suitable for treating a tissue target within the body, which target is accessible through the vascular system. Central to the invention is the use of a multi-component distal section having an interior stiffener and an exterior tubing member.
