It is an object of the invention to provide a method and a corresponding laser system that are simple and robust and that are able to provide sub-100 fs laser pulses using nonlinear frequency-conversion. The method of the invention comprises the steps of generating pulsed laser radiation at a fundamental wavelength, increasing the spectral bandwidth of the laser radiation by passing the laser radiation through a periodically poled nonlinear crystal material whose poling period is larger than or smaller than the poling period satisfying the quasi-phase-matching condition at the fundamental wavelength, and frequency-converting the spectrally broadened laser radiation. The laser system of the invention comprises a laser source generating pulsed laser radiation at a fundamental wavelength, a first periodically poled nonlinear crystal section arranged in the beam path and having a poling period larger than or smaller than the poling period satisfying the quasi-phase-matching condition at the fundamental wavelength to spectrally broaden the laser radiation, and a second periodically poled nonlinear crystal section arranged in the beam path downstream of the first section, wherein the second section is quasi-phase-matched at the fundamental wavelength to frequency-convert the laser radiation.

Generation of ultrashort laser pulses

An apparatus for generating laser pulses by non-linear four-wave mixing, including a pump laser source to emit a pump beam of femtosecond laser pulses at a pump wavelength, the pump laser source configured to couple the pump beam into a first beam path and an idler beam into a second beam path; a chirp unit to receive the pump beam from the pump laser source configured to temporally stretch the laser pulses, wherein the chirp unit is arranged in the first beam path before a parametric conversion unit; and wherein the parametric conversion unit receives the pump beam from the chirp unit and is configured to produce a signal beam at a signal wavelength by four-wave mixing in a non-linear optical medium, the parametric conversion unit receiving the idler beam via the second beam path, and the pump beam and the idler beam being superimposed in the non-linear optical medium.

Parametric conversion of chirped femtosecond pump pulses

A method and system for delivering laser pulses achieves the delivery of high quality laser pulses at the location of an application. The method includes the steps of: generating laser pulses, amplifying the laser pulses, temporally stretching the amplified laser pulses, and propagating the amplified laser pulses through an optical delivery fiber of desired length, wherein the laser pulses are temporally compressed in the optical delivery fiber and wherein the laser pulses undergo nonlinear spectral broadening in the optical delivery fiber.

Fiber delivery of short laser pulses

A device for generating light pulses includes a seed laser source for generating input light pulses. An optical pre-amplifier having variable gain receives the input light pulses from the seed laser source. An optical power amplifier receives the light pulses from the optical pre-amplifier and amplifies and compresses the received light pulses. The light pulses are compressed in the optical power amplifier in such a manner that the pulse duration of the output light pulses of the optical power amplifier is tunable via adjusting the gain of the optical pre-amplifier. Wavelength-tunable light pulses are obtained by supplying the output light pulses of the optical power amplifier to a highly non-linear optical fiber.
