Unique physical unclonable function objects are created by molding pre-magnetized or post-magnetized particles into a resin. The particles form a unique physical 'fingerprint' based on the random particle size, position, polar rotation, magnetization level, particle density, etc. This invention addresses devices for accurately measuring the physical fingerprint of a PUF, specifically including the X, Y, & Z components of the magnetic field at enough discrete points on the PUF to allow a confident recognition of the identification. A handheld wand is described for measuring the magnetic field along an arbitrary path.

The use of a magnetic particle based 'PUF' (Physically Unclonable Function) disk, when read by magnetic sensor(s), as a positional encoder is described. It is often necessary to include a linear or rotary encoder within a device for tracking motor movements, or to enable a closed-loop control algorithm on the motor system. These randomly dispersed magnetic particle disks can be used as a positional encoder, where the speed of movement and the direction of movement may be monitored.

A physical unclonable function ('PUF') object can be used to encode the geography or region in which device to which the PUF is attached may operate. Disclosed are two potential ways to regionalize a device using a PUF disk: placing the magnetic sensor at a different radius depending on the region or geography intended for sale; and altering the magnetic structure of the disk to magnetically encode the region into the sensor data.

Magnetic PUFs (Physical Unclonable Function) may utilizes a single 3-axis Hall-effect sensor for enrollment. When a PUF is manufactured, a Hall-effect sensor is used to model the PUF disk and store that data where it may be accessed. This process is called 'enrollment.' This invention improves upon the PUF implementation by introducing controlled variability into the enrollment, the reading of the PUF data from the Hall-effect sensors (the number and position of read sensors), the sampling method of the read sensor(s), and the processing of the PUF data.

A structural element to which a PUF tag is affixed is described that may be used to scan the PUF tag with a smartphone magnetometer by swiping the structural element along the side of the phone and controlling the position of the PUF tag with guides.

A consumable supply item for an imaging device holds an initial or refillable volume of ink. A housing defines an interior having a pair of opposed electrodes. The electrodes have a capacitance that varies in response to an amount of liquid between them. A controller energizes one electrode and receives an output reading from the other. The controller processes the reading on board the housing and supplies it as a digital data stream to the imaging device during use. A memory stores calibration values for an empty and full housing. The controller writes back to the memory present fluid levels obtained from the output reading of the electrode. An enable output allows operation or not of a fluid pump in the imaging device. Materials, construction, modularity, and fluid communication ports are further embodiments, to name a few.

An inkjet printing system is disclosed and comprises at least one fluid reservoir containing a fluid, a fluid line that fluidly couples the at least one fluid reservoir with an imaging device, and a fluid level sensing apparatus fluidly coupled with the at least one fluid reservoir. The fluid level sensing apparatus comprises: a bottom portion having a fluid volume V; an intermediate portion vertically adjacent the bottom portion and having a fluid volume V, the intermediate portion including a first fluid sensor spaced vertically from a second fluid sensor; and an upper portion vertically adjacent the intermediate portion and having a fluid volume V, wherein V&#x3e;V&#x3e;V. The inkjet printing system also comprises a pump fluidly coupled with the at least one fluid level sensing apparatus and configured to exert fluid pressure along the at least one fluid level sensing apparatus.

A container for holding a volume of fluid and having a housing defining an interior for retaining the volume of fluid; at least one in-tank tilt sensor connected to a controller and disposed inside the housing for generating a signal corresponding to a level of fluid inside the housing; and a support material attached to the housing and connected to the at least one in-tank tilt sensor to mechanically support the at least one in-tank tilt sensor such that the at least one in-tank tilt sensor is not in direct contact with the fluid inside the housing. The in-tank tilt sensor detects a change in fluid level which may only be caused by tilting of the imaging device. When tilting is registered, protective action is taken to prevent fluid from leaking.
