This invention relates to exhaust replication systems and methods, such as systems for testing automotive exhaust aftertreatment devices. More particularly, methods for steady state and transient generation and flow of NOand/or NO from a fluid such as nitric acid for introduction into the burner-based exhaust replication system.

Method and apparatus for steady state and transient generation of NOand no for use with burner-based exhaust replication systems

A method of using a burner-based exhaust replication system to generate exhaust that contains nitrogen dioxide (NO). An example of such as system is a system used to test automotive exhaust aftertreatment devices. A fluid that decomposes to generate NOas one of its decomposition products is selected. The fluid is heated thereby generating NO, with the amount and duration of heating is controlled to result in a desired decomposition extent of NOfrom the fluid. The fluid is then delivered to an exhaust stream of the system.

Generation of nitrogen dioxide for use with burner-based exhaust replication system

An improved SCRoF (selective catalytic reduction on filter) device for treating exhaust from an internal combustion engine. The filter has numerous entry and exit channels. Exhaust enters the entry channels and flows through side walls into the exit channels. Relative to the exhaust flow path, these side walls are coated on the downstream side with a ceria-based catalyst and on the upstream side with a Cu-zeolite catalyst. This allows the filter to optimally achieve both particulate matter oxidation and NOx reduction, respectively.

Enhanced soot oxidation on particulate filter using ceria-based catalyst and zone coating strategy

A burner-based exhaust replication system that includes mechanisms for rapidly exchanging exhaust aftertreatment devices for testing. The exhaust replication system has a test leg for delivering exhaust to an exhaust aftertreatment device and a bypass leg for bypassing exhaust around the test leg. The test leg is equipped with a rotating drum that holds a number of exhaust aftertreatment devices. The drum is rotatable to selectively align the aftertreatment devices with the test leg and is moveable laterally in a direction parallel to the test leg to aid in sealing the test leg to the aftertreatment device.

Burner-based exhaust replication system with rapid exchange of exhaust aftertreatment devices

A method of providing electrical power to on-board electrical devices of a vehicle. The engine has an EGR (exhaust gas recirculation loop) which may be a high pressure loop, a low pressure loop, or a dedicated cylinder loop. A catalyzed heat exchanger on the EGR loop has a steam reformation catalyst and a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger uses hot exhaust gas from the main exhaust line to heat the catalyst. A methane fuel source adds methane to the recirculated exhaust stream before it enters the catalyst, and the catalytic reaction increases the amount of hydrogen in the recirculated exhaust. The hydrogen is then delivered to a PEM fuel cell.
