A hydrogen evolution cell which on passage of an electric current liberates an amount of hydrogen proportional to an amount of current flowing through, includes an electrochemically oxidizable anode, a hydrogen cathode, an electrolyte and a casing surrounding the same, wherein the hydrogen cathode is associated structure of at least one pocket defining a hollow space or defines a hollow space in the presence of hydrogen overpressure or wherein the cathode forms such a pocket.

A fuel cell system includes at least one cooling channel that extends between a housing and a fuel cell stack disposed within the housing. The cooling channel has an inlet and an outlet for producing a gas flow in the cooling channel. As a result, a gas flow may be used for cooling and at the same time may be used for ventilation of the cathode.

Fuel cell system

The invention relates to a fuel cell stack composed of at least one fuel cell () and at least two separator structures ('). Said separator structures (&#x2032;) are open on at least one side towards the exterior in order to allow passive exchange of air. Also, said separator structures comprise a channel system (&#x2032;) for guiding fuel. The fuel cell can be embodied as a bi-fuel cell () composed of two electric cells. The anodes or cathodes of the two electric cells are arranged opposite each other.

The invention relates to a battery comprising an electrically non-conductive substrate () on which it is arranged, in addition to at least one cathode (), one anode (), and a separator/electrolyte layer () in the form of layers or films that are pre-formed from an electrochemically active or activatable material and optionally a polymer matrix and/or other auxiliary substances, in a corresponding sequence on the substrate (). The layer thickness of each electrode layer is 10 &#x3bc;m. The inventive battery also comprises at least one current diverter () and at least one battery contact () that are respectively in electrical contact with an electrode. Said battery is characterized in that it comprises at least one first covering layer () consisting of a first, electrically insulating material that is stable in relation to the used electrolyte and electrode material and has been deposited from the gas phase or in the form of a liquid or viscous paste. Said covering layer forms an encapsulation element with the substrate and optionally at least one other component, by which means the battery is sealed from the surrounding environment, and is provided with at least one recess () that is closed by an electroconductive material and is connected to at least one current diverter () of the battery. The invention also relates to a plurality of such batteries on the same substrate, and to methods for producing the cited batteries using wafer-level techniques.

The invention relates to a proton-conducting polymer membrane and to a method for the production thereof. Starting from a catalyst layer, which is homogeneously deposited on the polymer membrane (), the catalyst layer is subdivided into a number of catalyst segments () by microstructuring so that adjacent fuel cell units of a planar fuel cell arrangement can be realized in the smallest possible space.

A planar fuel cell system comprising at least two fuel cells which are electrically connected in series in a plane via horizontally overlapping connecting lugs and comprise an anode current collector on the anode side and comprise a cathode current collector on the cathode side is provided. The current collectors are electrically connected to the connecting lugs and a polymer electrolyte membrane, wherein the current path is led around the polymer electrolyte membrane. The fuel cell system is designed with a printed circuit board technique and as a composite of a first, anode-side printed circuit board and a second, cathode-side printed circuit board, and the current collectors and connecting lugs are designed as strip conductors of these printed circuit boards. Methods of manufacturing the fuel cell system are also provided.
