Sorbents are disclosed which exhibit less inherent leaching of arsenic and antimony than what is achieved by conventional sorbents. The inventive sorbents are formed by a process which includes the steps of contacting the porous sorbent particulate with a solution of a metal oxide or metal hydroxide, or a metal oxide or metal hydroxide precursor, and depositing metal oxides and hydroxides within the pores of the porous sorbent particulate. Purification of water is also described.

Sorbent and method of making

Sorbent material sheets are wound around a center core of material that includes additional sorbent. This configuration further increases the packaging efficiency and performance of the sorbent material sheets as part of an overall housing or apparatus. In some embodiments, the sorbent material sheets are arranged in a stacked configuration. Configurations of the sorbent material sheets as part of a canister are also described.

Sorbent devices

Sorbent materials are described that have enhanced performance in removing chlorine and chloramine, among other toxic compounds. The sorbent materials are formed by a process which includes steps of oxidation, adding a nitrogen-containing compound, and calcining the sorbent. The processes of forming the sorbent materials are also disclosed. The sorbent materials have excellent performance as measured by a chloramine and/or chlorine destruction number, and the sorbents retain a high nitrogen edge concentration. The sorbent materials may also be incorporated into devices such as filter assemblies.

Activated carbons having improved volumetric capacitance and double layer capacitors including these activated carbons are described herein.

Double layer capacitors

Activated carbon having a low contact pH and their use in the purification of water, as well as methods for making such low contact pH activated carbon and filters and methods for purifying water are described herein. The methods for preparing such low contact pH activated carbons provides an effective and less costly means for preparing activated carbons for purification processes.

Mitigating leaching of arsenic and antimony from activated carbon

A process is provided for the production of a catalytically active carbonaceous char. By this process, a nitrogen-containing compound is combined with an uncarbonized nitrogen-poor carbon-containing material. The resulting mixture is then carbonized and oxidized at temperatures less than 500&deg; C. The resulting char is next heated to temperatures greater than 500&deg; C and subsequently activated with H O, CO , or O , singly or in any combination, to result in the catalytically active carbonaceous char. The resulting catalytically active carbonaceous char has utility for the chemical conversion of peroxides, hydrides, SO , NO , and chloramines in liquid and/or gaseous media.

Process for production of carbonaceous chars having catalytic activity

An improved process is provided for the chemical conversion and removal of nitrogen oxides from gaseous streams containing a stoichiometric amount of ammonia by contacting a low temperature catalytically-active carbonaceous char with said gaseous stream. The invention provides for the use of a low temperature carbonaceous char capable of rapidly decomposing hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous solution.

Method for removal of nitrogen oxides from gaseous streams by cayalytic carbon in the presence of ammonia

A process is provided for the production of a catalytically-active carbonaceous char. By this process, a nitrogen-containing compound is combined with an uncarbonized nitrogen-poor carbon-containing material. The resulting mixture is then carbonized and oxidized at temperatures less than 600&deg; C. The resulting low-temperature char is next heated to temperatures greater than 600&deg; C. and subsequently activated with H O, CO , or O , singly or in any combination, to result in the catalytically-active carbonaceous char. The resulting catalytically-active carbonaceous char has utility for the chemical conversion of peroxides, hydrides, SO , NO , and chloramines in liquid and/or gaseous media.

An improved process is provided for the chemical conversion and removal of hydrogen sulfide from gaseous and liquid streams by contacting a low temperature catalytically-active carbonaceous char capable of rapidly decomposing hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous solution with said stream.

Method for removal of hydrogen sulfide from gaseous and liquid streams by catalytic carbon

An improved process is provided for the manufacture of N-phosphonomethylglycine from N-phophonomethyliminodiacetic acid in the presence of a molecular-oxygen containing gas utilizing a catalytically active carbonaceous char produced at low temperature. The improvement is provided by the use of a carbonaceous char capable of rapidly decomposing hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous solution.
