A highly efficient luminaire. The luminaire includes a light source that emits light. The emitted light is redirected by a light transformer having a curved circular reflective interior surface, the reflective interior surface reflecting the light in a predetermined pattern. A substantial amount of light being may be reflected close to an axis coincident with a radial line defining a radius of the circular reflective interior surface. Additionally, a substantial amount of light may be reflected in a pattern with low divergency or parallel with an axis of the light transformer. The light is transmitted to the exterior of the luminaire by an optical window.

Highly efficient luminaire having optical transformer providing precalculated angular intensity distribution and method therefore

A light module including a single light emitting diode (LED) and a rotationally symmetrical reflective light transformer providing an omnidirectional pattern with a pre-calculated intensity distribution. In alternative embodiments the light module may consist of a plurality of LEDs and the reflective light transformer, having plurality of identical segments, provides an omnidirectional pattern with a pre-calculated intensity distribution as a result of superposition of the limited angle pattern reflected by each segment. In order to provide high efficiency the light transformer reflective surface profile is designed using a given LED's spatial intensity distribution and required intensity distribution across the emitted omnidirectional pattern as a design parameters.

LED light module for omnidirectional luminaire

A highly efficient luminaire is provided. The luminaire includes a light source that emits light. The emitted light is redirected by a light transformer having a curved circular reflective interior surface, the reflective interior surface reflecting the light in a predetermined pattern. A substantial amount of light being may be reflected close to an axis coincident with a radial line defining a radius of the circular reflective interior surface. Additionally, a substantial amount of light may be reflected in a pattern with low divergency or parallel with an axis of the light transformer. The light is transmitted to the exterior of the luminaire by an optical window.

A portable luminaire includes an optical module, a power source and a housing. The optical module has at least one light emitting diode (LED) that emits light with a wide divergence, a non-imaging optical element and a transparent window. The non-imaging optical element (NIO) has a refractive member located around a LED optical axis and a total internal reflection member located around the refractive member. The refractive member and the total internal reflection member are integrated in a single transparent element having a mutual focal point. The NIO element collects a significant amount of light emitted by the LED with wide divergence located at the focal point to compress the collected light with high efficiency into a required pattern with a generally different angular distribution in a horizontal plane and a vertical plane, and to direct the compressed light outside of the luminaire.

Portable luminaire

A luminaire comprising a light transmissive optical element, a plurality of light sources, a light source support structure, and a light reflective surface. The light transmissive optical element, which preferably is a quasi-toroidal light transforming collector, is spaced from and disposed about an axis. The plural light sources are disposed radially outwardly of the optical element relative to the axis, to produce a corresponding plurality of light beams. Each light source directs its light beam toward the optical element. The optical element is shaped and adapted to collect and transform the light beams and pass them in the direction of the axis. The light reflective surface, which preferably is a curved conical collimating combiner, is spaced from the optical element, and is disposed along the axis. The light reflective surface is optically shaped to redirect along the axis and combine the plurality of light beams passed by the optical element to produce a collimated beam of light from the re-directed plurality of light beams.

Multiple source collimated beam luminaire

A light emitting apparatus includes a light source, a light transformer, a hemispherical optical window, a circuit and a base. The light transformer includes a truncated hollow conical reflector, a curved reflective surface, and an optical element. The conical reflector has a truncated end facing the light source and a cone base opposite the truncated end. The conical reflector axis is coincident with a light source axis, and light passes through an opening on the truncated end. The curved reflective surface is between the truncated end and the cone base. The surface reflects light from the light source in a limited angle omnidirectional pattern with precalculated intensity distribution. The optical element is adjacent the cone base in a plane perpendicular to the conical reflector axis, and disperses the light passing through the truncated hollow cone reflector.

LED-based elevated omnidirectional airfield light

An in-pavement high intensity LED-based luminaire includes a housing, a power controller, a light module and a thermoelectric cooling device. The housing includes a generally flat top surface having at least one transparent window for output light passage. The power controller has an input and an output, wherein the input is electrically connected to an airfield power infrastructure and the output is electrically connected to a light module. The light module includes multiple high flux LEDs and a non-imaging light transformer. The non-imaging light transformer includes an input end opposite an output end, a refractive member located around the LED optical axis, and a total internal reflection member. The thermoelectric cooling device provides LED temperature control for emitted luminous flux, color and spatial intensity distribution stabilization, and is electrically connected to the power controller.

In-pavement directional LED luminaire

A light module includes a light source and a reflective light transformer. The light source emits light with a limited angle omnidirectionally in a plane perpendicular to a light source optical axis. The reflective light transformer is located around the light source, and collects most of the light emitted by the light source and redirects and redistributes the collected light in a direction parallel to the light source optical axis. The light transformer includes a reflective surface with a precalculated arbitrary profile that transforms a light source spatial light distribution into a specific pattern with a generally different angular spread in a horizontal plane and a vertical plane.

Light module

A highly efficient LED lamp includes an optical module and a housing. The optical module has at least one light emitting diode (LED) that emits light with a wide divergence, a non-imaging optical (NIO) element and a transparent window. The NIO element includes a refractive member located around a LED optical axis and a total internal reflection member located around the refractive member. The refractive member and the total internal reflection member are integrated in a single transparent element having a mutual focal point, wherein the NIO element collects a significant amount of light emitted by the LED with wide divergence located at the focal point, to compress the collected light with high efficiency into a beam with a generally different angular spread in a horizontal plane and a vertical plane and to direct the compressed light outside of the lamp.

Highly efficient LED lamp

A luminaire flush with a horizontal surface and comprising a housing, an optical window, a light source, and an optical element. The housing has an internal cavity disposed beneath the horizontal surface and defines an opening disposed adjacent the horizontal surface. The optical window, substantially flat and transparent, has a surface that overlays the housing opening. The light source, disposed within the housing cavity, provides a spatial light distribution pattern which defines an optical axis that is disposed substantially perpendicular relative to the optical window surface. The optical element, also disposed within the housing cavity, redistributes light rays emitted by the light source along preselected angles relative to the horizontal surface.

Flush luminaire with optical element for angular intensity redistribution

A remote light source lighting system is provided having an illuminator assembly including a housing. Held within the housing is a high intensity light source for providing light energy to a fiber optic cable bundle connected to the housing and facing the light source. The cable bundle includes a plurality of plastic optical fibers wherein at least one of the terminal ends of the bundle is formed by molding an optical quality resin around an optically transparent ferrule that binds the exposed ends of the optical fibers. The housing further includes a separate air plenum containing a blower. The blower produces a high velocity air stream directed precisely at the terminal end of the cable adjacent the light source to cool the terminal end.

High efficiency lighting system having a remote light source

Surface light assemblies are disclosed that are particularly useful as edge light assemblies for illuminating the outer boundaries of a deck of a ship or a heliport and as line-up light assemblies for illuminating a path on a surface such as a ship deck, a runway or the like. The light assembly includes a fiber optic cable connected to the bottom of a housing or enclosure which distributes light from a terminal end of the cable. The terminal end may include a transformer which produces a particular spread or cone of a light output pattern. Alternatively, a diffuser or optical element may be placed directly adjacent the terminal end of the cable or transformer which shapes, directs and homogenizes light emanating from the cable. The light assembly can include a durable glass window which protects the diffuser and cable and which can be adapted to filter out certain wavelengths of light producing a light output in a desired color. Such a construction is particularly useful for deck edge lighting. Alternatively, the light may be aimed or directed by a reflective surface directly toward a particular location in a specified narrow pattern. Such a construction is particularly useful for line-up light assemblies.
