The wear sleeve in the present invention comprises a rearward split ring portion and an intermediate cylindrical ring portion adjacent a forward shoulder portion. The outer diameter of the wear sleeve intermediate portion and rearward split ring portion is uniform. The wear sleeve is inserted into the bit holder's stepped bore aperture. The split ring portion is radially compressed by the smaller diameter opposite portion end as the sleeve is hammered and axially displaced into the bit holder. The split ring portion forms frictional contact with the opposite end portion of the aperture. The wear sleeve friction fit can be easily removed manually in the field. The bit holder and cooperating support block are designed to limit the amount of relative yaw between the two members during operation to reduce the overall wear there between. The invention includes a groove having side surfaces that are inclined at least 15 degrees with respect to the horizontal axis and the cutting bit is positioned more apt toward the central axis of the support block than prior art designs.

A cutting tool assembly including a protective wear sleeve that is fixed in the cavity of a bit holder by a tapered wedge portion that is compressed in a correspondingly tapered portion of the bit holder cavity and an accompanying retainer both combine affix the wear sleeve to the bit holder cavity in a secure manner. The applicant's protective wear sleeve invention can be set in the bit holder by several axial blows with a hammer or other appropriate tool. Unlike some other designs in the prior art which require the insertion of a pin or nut threaded onto a bolt or clip connected to the rear end of the cutting to secure the wear protection sleeve to the bit holder in the invention no other assembly step is necessary to secure the protective sleeve inside the bit holder cavity. The protective sleeve will remain in this position with no relative axial movement or rotation between the wear sleeve and the bit holder during operation of the cutting tool machinery.

An excavation cutting tool holder includes a cutting tool holder having a holder body portion and a holder shank, the holder shank having a press fit portion and a shank bottom end, the shank press fit portion having a shank press fit dimension and the shank bottom end having a tool holder locator. The excavation cutting tool holder assembly further includes a support block having a block body, the block body having a block bore, the block bore having a block bore press fit portion and a block engagor, the block bore press fit portion having a block bore press fit dimension less than the shank press fit dimension such that the shank press fit portion press fits with the block bore press fit portion while the block engagor engages the tool holder locator so as to orient the cutting tool holder relative to the support block.

A cutting bit has a bit body which has a forward end and a rearward end. The bit body contains a seat at the forward end thereof. The bit body contains a bore intersecting the seat wherein a bore wall defines the bore. A cutting insert is received by the seat wherein the cutting insert presents a side surface facing the bore. A wedge has a generally longitudinal seating surface. The wedge has a support surface opposite to the longitudinal seating surface. The wedge is received within the bore so that the longitudinal seating surface of the wedge contacts the side surface of the cutting insert and for at least a portion of the length of the wedge the entire support surface contacts the bore wall so as to frictionally retain the cutting insert in the seat.

A cutting tool assembly includes a support block having a concealable outer surface portion, first and second bores, and first and second fluid passages. The first fluid passage is in fluid communication with the first bore and the second fluid passage. The second fluid passage has an axis and extends between the concealable outer surface portion and the second bore. Furthermore, the second bore and the second fluid passage are configured such that the axis may be extended through the second bore and beyond the support block without intersecting the support block. The cutting tool assembly also includes a replaceable spray nozzle having a body that extends into the first bore such that the spray nozzle is in fluid communication with the first fluid passage.

An excavation cutting tool holder retention assembly includes a support block having a tool holder bore, the tool holder bore having a bore interior surface. The excavation cutting tool holder retention assembly also includes a cutting tool holder having a shank portion, the shank portion having a shank engagement surface. The excavation cutting tool holder retention assembly further includes a locking member forced between the bore interior surface and the shank engagement surface so as to frictionally retain the shank portion of the cutting tool holder within the tool holder bore.

This invention relates to an excavation cutting tool holder retention system. The excavation cutting tool holder retention system includes a support block having a tool holder bore. The excavation cutting tool holder retention system also includes a tool holder having an effective shank, the effective shank being expandably adjustable within the tool holder bore so as to retain the effective shank within the tool holder bore.

A tool sleeve rotation limitation system for reducing the rotation of a tool sleeve within a support block bore of a support block, the tool sleeve having a forward portion and a rearward portion. The tool sleeve rotation limitation system comprises a rotation limitation member located in an engaging relationship between the rearward portion of the tool sleeve and the block bore such that the rotation limitation member will be moved axially along the rearward portion of the tool sleeve as the tool sleeve is inserted into the block bore so as to engage the block bore and the rearward portion of the tool sleeve and reduce rotation of the tool sleeve within the block bore.

A cutting tool retention system for retaining a cutting tool having a tool recess. The cutting tool retention system comprises a support block having a block bore and a block recess intersecting the block bore and a clip movably situated in the block recess, the clip having a spring structure which engages the support block and urges the clip into an engaging relationship with the tool recess of the cutting tool situated within the block bore, the spring structure allowing the clip to be disengaged from an engaging relationship with the tool recess of the cutting tool situated within the block bore by applying force directly to the clip so as to overcome the urging of the spring structure.

A tool sleeve rotation limitation system for reducing the rotation of a tool sleeve within a block bore of a support block, the tool sleeve having a sleeve engagement surface and the block bore having a block engagement surface. The tool sleeve rotation limitation system comprises a rotation limitation member located between the tool sleeve and the block bore so as to engage the tool engagement surface and the sleeve engagement surface and reduce rotation of the tool sleeve within the block bore, the rotation limitation member having a member perimeter which conforms to at least one of the sleeve engagement surface and the block engagement surface. Alternatively the tool sleeve rotation limitation system comprises a resilient rotation limitation member located between the tool sleeve and the block bore so as to frictionally engage the tool sleeve and the block bore and reduce rotation of the tool sleeve within the block bore.

A drill bit for drilling holes in a work surface including a hard wear-resistant insert and a metal body including a top working surface of an irregular surface configuration having a slot for retaining the hard wear-resistant insert. The body having a metal grain structure substantially parallel with the contour of the body. In a preferred embodiment the body is formed by cold-heading.
