A system for transporting articles along a treatment path in a treatment area. The conveyor system includes a conveyor and a plurality of pendulums. The conveyor includes first and second drive segments laterally spaced from and parallel to one another. The pendulums include first pendulums moving along the first drive segment and second pendulums moving along the second drive segments in aligned and opposed pairs. Further features of the invention include a guide assembly having a first element coupled to move with a carrier assembly and a second element engaging the first element to stabilize the rotational orientation of the carrier assembly. Other features of the present invention include a conveyor system configuration that facilitates transportation of articles about horizontal curves as well as a unique pendulum configuration particularly suited for use with the invention.

A chain tension monitoring apparatus and method includes a conveyor drive having a fixed frame and a floating frame. The floating frame supports a conveyor drive unit and is biased against the fixed frame by a compression spring to oppose forces generated by the conveyor drive operation. A force sensor is mounted to the floating frame to sense chain pull applied thereto. A pre-compression load is applied to the force sensor and chain pull is monitored as a function of the pre-compression load and actual load sensed by the force sensor.

An apparatus and method for reducing the noise generated by colliding conveyor carriers is disclosed which comprises urethane bumpers and a method of attaching same to portions of the carriers that do not make contact with other carriers when the carriers are accumulated. The bumpers extend from the carriers a sufficient distance to contact a similar bumper on an adjacent carrier when one carrier rolls up against another. The bumpers do not prevent the normally contacting portions of the carriers from coming into contact, but merely absorb a portion of the kinetic energy of the moving carrier to reduce the noise generated when the contacting portions of the trolleys do meet, and the presence of these bumpers does not adversely affect the spacing of the carriers in the accumulation line.

Conveyor track

An improved conveyor track system is provided wherein the track segments are provided with longitudinal channels of T-shaped cross-section which are offset from the centerline of the track and which accept rectangular splice bars that are used to secure the track segments together. The system is provided with a series of yokes which are connected to the track segments by means of bolts and rectangular connectors disposed in the longitudinal channels of the track segments, and whose position on the track segments is adjustable in both a horizontal and vertical direction.

An article transporting wheeled cart is reciprocatably moved along a pair of transversely spaced rails by a power transmitting unit detachably mounted between and below the rails and comprising a pair of trolley tracks secured to the upstanding legs of transversely extending longitudinally spaced U-shaped track yokes which have base portions located below the tracks and attached to a fluid pressure cylinder unit longitudinally coextensive with the tracks. A trolley, having a pair of oppositely acting driving dogs engageable with the cart, is supported on the tracks and is connected to a motion transmitter reciprocatably driven by the cylinder unit.

Apparatus for automatically deheading wrapped newsprint rolls consists of a framework positioned above a pair of rotatable rollers adapted to support and rotate the newsprint roll. Two carriages are slidably supported on the framework above the newsprint roll. Each carriage is independently movable axially relative to one of the opposite end faces of the roll, is provided with an annular locating member engageable with that end face, and has a radially movable cutter adapted to sever the head wrapping covering that end face as the newsprint roll is rotated by the supporting rollers. The annular locating member is mounted obliquely relative to the newsprint roll axis to compensate for deformation of the newsprint roll end face.
