A suspension system with a shock absorber having a manually adjustable lock-out valve and a blow-off valve for controlling damping characteristics suitable for a wide variety of large, medium, and small bumps, and rider induced suspension action, while selectively providing a stiff suspension for increased drive line efficiency. The shock absorber includes a damper containing a non-compressible fluid. A piston dividing the chamber into two portions has a primary channel and a secondary channel. A lock-out valve is coupled to the primary channel and is manually movable from an open position to a closed position. In the closed position, the hydraulic fluid is blocked from flowing through the primary channel to provide stiffened damping characteristics of the damper. In the open position, the hydraulic fluid can flow through the primary channel to provide softened damping characteristics. A blow-off valve is positioned in the chamber's second portion adjacent to the secondary channel to block the secondary channels. The blow-off valve is movable relative to the secondary channel between closed and open position. Movement of the blow-off valve to the open position occurs when a critical hydraulic pressure is reached in the chamber to overcome the biasing member acting against the blow-off valve. A small gap is provided between the blow-off valve and the damper body to provide for smooth hydraulic fluid passage and to achieve supple shock absorber action when the blow-off valve is in the open position.

Shock absorber with an adjustable lock-out value and two-stage flow restriction

A dampener for a shock absorber of a vehicle, such as a bicycle, is mounted within a telescoping front fork including a stanchion tube and a coaxial slide tube. The dampener includes an internally received hydraulic fluid sleeve that defines a hydraulic chamber in which a piston assembly is disposed. Movement of the piston assembly through hydraulic fluid within the hydraulic chamber is selectively adjusted by metering the flow of bypass hydraulic fluid to the back side of the piston assembly by adjusting a fluid bypass assembly disposed longitudinally within the stanchion tube. The responsive valve assembly includes outlet and inlet ports, and biased bypass valves that move between open and closed positions. In response to sensed velocity and/or displacement of the piston assembly, thereby adjusting the damping of the shock absorber.

Shock absorber with variable bypass damping

A shock absorber for a vehicle includes a fluid-filled cylinder having a closed end, a shaft extending partially into the cylinder, a valve attached to the first end of the shaft, and a power supply. The valve includes a valve piston and a bender. The valve piston includes at least one orifice extending therethrough. The bender is seated adjacent the orifice in the piston. The bender includes a piezoelectric material embedded therein. The piezoelectric material includes sides with conductive material disposed thereon. The power supply is attached to the conductive material across the piezoelectric material in the bender to apply a voltage across the piezoelectric material to change the stiffness of the bender. A sensor is also included for monitoring the displacement and velocity of the piston within the fluid-filled cylinder. The biasing force on the bender is changed on sensor readings according to predetermined logic sequence. In another embodiment, a dampener is provided that allows fluid bypass outside of the main fluid reservoir through a channel that leads to a valve. The valve is preferably controlled by a piezoelectric bender outside the reservoir. In various embodiments, the valve includes a balanced cylinder with secondary fluid flow controlled by the piezo bender to activate a moving diaphragm for valve movement.

Shock absorber with bypass damping

A dampener (628) for a shock absorber of a vehicle, such as a bicycle, is mounted within a telescoping front fork including a stanchion tube (116) and a coaxial slide tube (618). The dampener includes an internally received hydraulic fluid sleeve (640) that defines a hydraulic chamber (648) in which a piston assembly (732) is disposed. Movement of the piston assembly through hydraulic fluid within the hydraulic chamber is selectively adjusted by metering the flow of bypass hydraulic fluid to the back side of the piston assembly by adjusting a responsive valve assembly (670) disposed longitudinally within the stanchion tube. The responsive valve assembly includes a piezoelectric bender (702) that is controlled by circuitry (712) to change its biasing relative to a valve member (694) in response to sensed velocity and/or displacement of the piston assembly.

Shock absorber with stanchion mounted bypass damping

A shock absorber for a vehicle includes a fluid-filled cylinder having a closed end, a shaft extending partially into the cylinder, a valve attached to the first end of the shaft, and a power supply. The valve includes a valve piston and a bender. The valve piston includes at least one orifice extending therethrough. The bender is seated adjacent the orifice in the piston. The bender includes a piezoelectric material embedded therein. The piezoelectric material includes sides with conductive material disposed thereon. The power supply is attached to the conductive material across the piezoelectric material in the bender to apply a voltage across the piezoelectric material to change the stiffness of the bender. A sensor is also included for monitoring the displacement and velocity of the piston within the fluid-filled cylinder. The biasing force on the bender is changed on sensor readings according to predetermined logic sequence.

Piezoelectric shock absorber valve

A front fork suspension for a bicycle provides a front fork having a pair of fork members with ends that support a front wheel therebetween. A handlebar stem assembly is rotatably mountable in a head tube of a bicycle frame. The stem assembly includes, at an upper end, a forwardly-extending handlebar-supporting portion, or stem, that is substantially transverse to an axis of the head tube. A lower linkage is provided having a first end that is pivotally mounted to a lower end of the stem and an opposing second end that is pivotally mounted to a first location on the front fork. An upper linkage is provided having a first end that is pivotally mounted to the handlebar-supporting portion and a second end that is pivotally mounted to a second location on the front fork. A compression spring is attached between the upper linkage and the lower linkage at an attachment point on the upper linkage located substantially at the first end thereof and an attachment point on the lower linkage located substantially between the first end and the second thereof. The upper linkage and the lower linkage are constructed so that the wheel-supporting ends of the front fork displace, in response to an applied force, along a curved path. An adjusting member can be provided to one of the linkages to vary the curved path, hence varying the suspension's ride characteristics.

Bicycle front fork suspension

The invention provides a suspension system for a bicycle. The suspension system utilizes novel shock absorbers which contain elastomeric elements which are restricted against radial expansion by retention washers. A rear wheel suspension system has a chain stay and a seat stay joined at one end and free at the opposite end. The free end of the chain stay is pivotably attached to the mainframe at a location close to, and preferably above, the largest diameter sprocket of the crank assembly. The linear shock absorbers of the invention are positioned such that they displace along an axis aligned tangentially with a circle having its center at the pivot.

Bicycle suspension system

A bicycle crank assembly utilizing a hollow crank arm is disclosed. The crank arm is welded to a hub for mounting to an axle and reinforced using a doubler provided at a point of maximum stress to minimize the likelihood of breakage at the maximum stress point. The resulting bicycle crank assembly exhibits reduced weight without a substantial reduction of torsional or bending strength.

A handlebar assembly for a cycle includes a column member which is securable to a cycle so that it is rotatable about the steering column axis thereof, a pivot arm which is pivotably mounted on the column member so that it extends forwardly therefrom, a spring assembly for resiliently resisting pivoting movement of the pivot arm and a handlebar element of the forward end of the pivot arm. The handlebar element is adapted and mounted so that the hands of an operator of the cycle are positioned forward of the steering column axis, and the spring assembly is operative for resiliently resisting pivoting movement of the pivot arm to cushion shocks which are transmitted to the column member when bumps are encountered in an irregular roadway or off-road surface.

Handlebar assembly for cycles

A collapsible wheelchair and a lift assembly which is permanently mountable in a vehicle and operable for moving the wheelchair and an occupant thereof between the interior and the exterior of the vehicle. The wheelchair includes a chair member and a pair of enlarged rear wheels on the chair member which are operable for movably supporting the rear portion of the chair member on a supporting surface when the chair member is in the erected position thereof. The wheelchair is movable to a collapsed position wherein one of the rear wheels is positioned behind the back portion of the chair member in substantially parallel relation therewith and the other rear wheel is positioned beneath the seat portion of the chair member in substantially parallel relation therewith. When the wheelchair is in the collapsed position, it has a reduced overall profile to enable the wheelchair and an occupant thereof to be effectively moved between the interior and the exterior of a vehicle with the lift assembly.
