Tools for honing an exterior cylindrical reference surface and for honing an interior cylindrical surface concentric with but offset from the reference surface each have a cylindrical feed sleeve slidable axially along the outside of the tool body. As the sleeve is movable axially with respect to the tool body, a plurality of honing stones carried by the tool body moves radially with respect to the cylindrical surface being honed.

Inside, outside honing tool

An improved honing stone which minimizes the vibrations to which the abrasive material is subjected during the honing process. The improved stone has a hole formed in a dead zone thereof. A piece of resilient material is forced into the hole. When the stone is inserted into the honing machine, the resilient material retains and cushions the stone within the machine.

Honing stones

A novel locking means comprising a tube which is squeezed flat so as to cease a flexible cable and wherein identification of the seal can be printed on the flatted portion with a transverse opening formed through the tube through which the free end of the flexible cable can be passed so as to be locked by a set screw threadedly received in the end of the tube and wherein the end of the set screw is reduced in cross-section so that it will break off to provide a seal that cannot be opened without cutting the cable and destroying the integrity of the seal. A second embodiment comprises a bolt with a threaded cylindrical nut formed with a transverse opening into which a set screw can be received so as to lock the bolt in the cylindrical member by engaging a reduced cross-section of the bolt and wherein the set screw also has a reduced cross-sectional portion so that it will break off when the set screw is tightened.

Screw tube lock

A safety locking switch that can connect a selected wire to a grounded plate, on which the switch is mounted, has a metallic housing, a key operated lock mounted in the housing, an insulator affixed to the housing and an electrical lead extending through the insulator into the housing. In the locked position, the lock is in contact with both the electrical lead and the housing thereby grounding the selected wire connected to the lead. When unlocked by the key, the lock moves away from the end of the lead within the housing thereby open circuiting the path between the grounded plate and the selected wire.

Safety locking system

A piston ring honing machine and method are disclosed wherein a stack of piston rings are face finished simultaneously by compressing the rings radially inwardly and into a generally circular configuration and retaining the outside diameter of that circular configuration by confining the compressed rings within a plurality of cylindrical drive rollers disposed about the rings. A honing tool is placed against the ring faces and the rings driven to rotate about the circle center by rotation of one or more of the cylindrical rollers. The stack of rings therefore moves relative to the honing tool to finish the ring face. The tool may be reciprocated in the direction of the cylindrical roller axes to more uniformly finish the ring faces.

Piston ring honing

An improved insert is disclosed for use with a honing tool for retaining an abrasive element while mechanically isolating the abrasive element from the remainder of the honing tool. The improved slot liner is in the form of a bushing having four interconnected wall sections extending generally parallel to one another and including an arrangement for holding the bushing fixedly within the body of the honing tool. A slot at one end and a flexible curved spring member at the other end of the insert provide for improved, spring-loaded gripping characteristics of the insert. The abrasive element is additionally supported and retained due to frictional forces on the other bushing surfaces.

Insert for honing tool

Apparatus and method for honing internal surfaces of a workpiece wherein at least one of the surfaces to be honed is a flat or non-circular aperture. Movable honing stones are mounted in a holding tool such that they can move back and forth transversely of the honing tool as the honing tool is moved longitudinally of the surface to be honed. A first series of honing stones is mounted in a series of parallel slots formed in the honing tool at an angle such that when the tool moves in a first longitudinal direction the honing stones will move to one side of the tool due to reaction forces and due to the angle at which the mounting slots are formed in the tool. A second series of honing stones is mounted in a second plurality of parallel slots formed in the tool such that they move transversely in a direction opposite to the first plurality of stones when the tool is moved in a first longitudinal direction. The result is that the first and second plurality of stones alternately move back and forth transversely with respect to the tool as the direction of travel of the tool changes resulting in a very precise and effective honing operation as well as providing that the tools are self-cleaning. In a preferable arrangement the first and second plurality of stones are mounted in slots which are at an angle of 45.degree. with the longitudinal axis of the tool.

Reaction honing tool for honing a flat surface

A generally cylindrical honing tool for internally honing a workpiece which may have an interrupted bore is disclosed having a plurality of radially disposed axially extending tool supported thermoplastic guide members for engaging the workpiece at a first relatively constant pressure to aid in aligning the tool with the workpiece and having a plurality of radially disposed axially extending tool supported abrasive elements for engaging the workpiece at a pressure which is variable and independent of the guide pressure for abrading material from the workpiece.

Guided honing tool

A honing tool slot protecting bushing is disclosed for gripping an abrasive element while mechanically isolating the abrasive element from the remainder of the honing tool. The slot liner is in the form of a bushing having four interconnected wall portions extending generally parallel to one another and including either a lip arrangement or a threaded fastener arrangement for holding the bushing fixedly within the body of the honing tool. The abrasive element is supported by the bushing and retained therein due to the frictional forces between the abrasive element and the bushing.
