A monochrometer having a stray light trap which substantially directs stray light away from light of wavelength of interest and/or absorb the stray light so as to substantially reduce the stray light component in the light of interest. The monochrometer has internal surfaces each having one of several optical characteristics.

A centrifuge system includes a drive shaft bearing mounted to a drive shaft for engaging a solenoid actuated plunger in low friction contact over a predetermined angular velocity range of the drive shaft. The drive shaft bearing includes a frustoconical bearing surface that contacts a plunger bearing mounted in an end of the plunger when the solenoid actuates the plunger. The frustoconical bearing surface transforms vibrations of the drive shaft transverse to its axis of rotation into linear motion of the plunger relative to the drive shaft. The plunger is mounted inside the solenoid such that the solenoid, the plunger and the drive shaft are substantially concentric. The plunger is movable in the solenoid in response to application of an appropriate electrical current to the solenoid. However, the plunger fits sufficiently close within the solenoid that the force movement of the plunger arising from contact with the vibrating drive shaft bearing is damped by friction between the solenoid and the plunger.

A centrifuge overspeed protection and imbalance detection system is structured to provide a method for detecting rotor imbalance and rotor overspeed. The system has a single transducer to provide real-time data necessary to detect rotor imbalance and control motor speed. Motor speed is controlled by synthesis of a drive frequency signal for driving the inverter motor control. The drive frequency signal may be inhibited to provide slow acceleration or deceleration, or to shut the motor off by providing a zero slip frequency. Motor control is responsive to a Rotor Identification circuit and operator programming, as well as a closed loop response to the real time tach signal. Imbalance detection is provided by counting tach pulses in each of a plurality of intervals, detecting deviations in tach pulse rate and sounding an alarm when the irregularity of tach pulse signals exceeds the limits of a predetermined standard deviation.

Centrifuge overspeed protection and imbalance detection system

A direct contact hyperthermia applicator includes an ultrasonic lens with an array of ultrasonic transducers and an array of microwave antenna elements mounted behind the lens and positioned for transmission of ultrasonic wave energy and microwave energy therethrough. The antenna elements can be waveguide sections having radiating apertures or microstrip antenna elements. A fluid enclosure is defined between the front surface of the lens and a thin rubber sheet sealed around the periphery of the lens. During hyperthermia treatment, the rubber sheet conforms to the contours of the patient's body. The fluid, which is typically cooled distilled water, improves coupling of microwave energy and ultrasonic wave energy into the patient's body and cools the surface region.

A system for cooling and lubricating the drive motor of a centrifuge. The shaft of the motor includes an internal passage with an inlet having a size and taper sufficient to provide the desired rate of cooling oil flow through the motor. A lower bearing proportioning arrangement applies a high percentage of a small proportion of the total oil flow to the lower bearing. An upper bearing proportioning arrangement applies a low percentage of a large proportion of the total oil flow to the upper bearing. Together these features assure a high degree of motor cooling without overlubricating the bearings.

Centrifugal oil pump flow proportioning and cooling system

An apparatus for removing liquid contaminants from the oil sump of a vacuum pump. A liquid separator mounted on the housing of the pump connects the interior of the pump housing to the atmosphere through a liquid trap. An inlet passage through the separator connects a source of purging air to the interior of the pump housing, causing the air therein to flow through the liquid trap to the atmosphere. Because outflowing purged air is cooled by inflowing purging air, oil is selectively retained within the pump housing.

Vacuum pump purging apparatus

A thermoelectric temperature control assembly for transferring heat to or from a heat sink. A nonconducting substrate is provided with a plurality of mounting openings for receiving the mounting features of a plurality of respective thermoelectric devices. Each mounting openings is internally partitioned so as to form a pair of flexible tongues by which the thermoelectric devices may be clamped to a heat sink to assure a good thermal contact therewith.
