In a system for the closed-loop control of the supercharging of an internal-combustion engine, a manipulated variable is produced by means of a controller in dependence upon the deviation between a desired supercharging and an actual supercharging. With this manipulated variable, a final controlling element is triggered, which influences the supercharging of the internal-combustion engine. The controller parameters of the controller are repeatedly optimized. To this end, a model for the internal-combustion engine is specified, inclusive of a charging device, and the model parameters are determined from the manipulated variable and the actual supercharging. Controller parameters are determined from the model parameters and relayed to the controller. Moreover, in certain operating states, the controller parameters are stored in start-up characteristic maps. The start-up characteristic maps supply the initial values for the controller parameters each time the closed-loop control is activated.

A knock sensor for indirect or direct fixing to an internal combustion engine has a housing (10) with a pressure sleeve (11) on the outer side of which a piezoceramic disk, a seismic mass (16), the contact disks (14), and the insulating disks (13) are arranged. The insulating disks (13) or the piezoelectrical disk (15) are or is made slightly electrically conductive so that the voltage spikes which occur due to the pyroelectrical effect can be easily eliminated. In this way, faulty measuring and interference can be avoided in the electrical circuit connected to the knock sensor.

The invention is directed to a method for checking the operability of a conduit system conducting a fluid flow. The conduit system is for an internal combustion engine and utilizes two fluids having temperatures which are different from each other. In this way, it is possible to set quite well-defined measuring conditions. The fluid flow in the conduit system to be checked is coupled to the temperature sensor in such a manner that the temperature thereof changes with a relatively steep gradient when, starting at a specific time point, the above-mentioned fluid operates to warm the temperature sensor. When the magnitude of the gradient remains below a threshold value, the conduit system checked is evaluated to be operational. The measurement is reliable even though it requires only a single temperature sensor.

The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for monitoring the operability of a heater of an oxygen-measuring probe which is mounted in the exhaust-gas channel of an internal combustion engine. The principle of operation of the invention is based on the fact that the supply voltage of the probe heater drops during loading by the electrical resistance of the heating element. The voltage difference is dependent upon the magnitude of the resistance and therefore at least the three states can be distinguished, namely: normal operation, circuit interruption and short circuit. The operational state of the probe heater which is so determined is displayed to the driver by activation of a corresponding control unit and/or is stored, as required, in a fault memory. A first control unit of a multiple function control system for a motor vehicle engine controls a function, such as fuel injection, for which it is desirable to provide an engine load signal measured by the amount of air drawn or forced into the engine per unit of time, determined by what is generally known as an air quantity meter. A second control unit of the control system controls the timing of an electrical ignition system for which it has been conventional to supply an engine load signal derived from a pressure transducer. In order to dispense with the pressure transducer and to make both control units subject to adaptive correction of the air quantity signal, the output of the air quantity meter is furnished to the second control system for modification therein by the computation facilities normally included in modern ignition control systems so as to shift or expand the range of engine load signals obtained from the air quantity meter to provide the same degree of resolution as would be available from a pressure transducer. For adaptive correction, the engine-load-to-engine-speed characteristic at a predetermined position of the throttle valve at or near full load is stored, both to provide a plausibility check of the system when the engine is operating at or near full load, and to provide for a correction of the engine load signal of a kind which would minimize the difference between the actual and reference characteristic lines when the engine is operating at or near full load.
