Arrayed imaging systems having improved alignment and associated methods

A task-based imaging system for obtaining data regarding a scene for use in a task includes an image data capturing arrangement for (a) imaging a wavefront of electromagnetic energy from the scene to an intermediate image over a range of spatial frequencies, (b) modifying phase of the wavefront, (c) detecting the intermediate image, and (d) generating image data over the range of spatial frequencies. The task-based imaging system also includes an image data processing arrangement for processing the image data and performing the task. The image data capturing and image data processing arrangements cooperate so that signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the task-based imaging system is greater than SNR of the task-based imaging system without phase modification of the wavefront over the range of spatial frequencies.

Task-based imaging systems

In an embodiment, a low height imaging system has: one or more optical channels and a detector array, each of the optical channels (a) associated with at least one detector of the array, (b) having one or more optical components and a restrictive ray corrector, and (c) configured to direct steeper incident angle field rays onto the at least one detector.

Imaging systems having ray corrector, and associated methods

In an embodiment, a method forms a lens with wavefront coding. The method includes positioning a lens in a mold; and curing material onto a surface of the lens to form an aspheric surface of the lens with wavefront coding. In another embodiment, a system for fabricating and evaluating a modified lens includes a collar for holding an initial lens, the initial lens having a front surface and a rear surface, a pin having a surface for molding a moldable material onto the front surface of the initial lens, to form the modified lens, an image forming arrangement; and a test object to be imaged by the modified lens and the image forming arrangement.

Aspheric lens forming methods

A method for generating an output image of a scene is disclosed. A detector of a task-based imaging system includes a plurality of pixels, and the scene includes at least one object located at a given object distance within a range of object distances between the object and the imaging system. The method includes capturing a high resolution image of the scene, converting the high resolution image into an image spectrum of the scene, determining a defocused optical transfer function (OTF) of the imaging system over the range of object distances and determining a pixel modulation transfer function (MTF) over the plurality of pixels. The method also includes multiplying the image spectrum with the OTF and the MTF to generate a modified image spectrum of the scene, converting the modified image spectrum into a modified image of the scene, and generating the output image from the modified image.

Zoom lens systems and methods for imaging incoming rays over a range of ray angles are disclosed. The incoming rays are characterized by at least phase. The zoom lens system includes an optical axis and is characterized by a plurality of modulation transfer functions (MTFs) corresponding at least to the range of ray angles. The zoom lens system includes an optical group disposed along the optical axis, including at least one variable optical element that has a variable focal length selectable between at least two distinct focal length values. The optical group also includes a wavefront coding element. The wavefront coding element alters at least the phase of the incoming rays, such that the plurality of MTFs corresponding to the range of ray angles, for each one of the two distinct focal length values, are less sensitive to misfocus-like aberrations than a corresponding system without the wavefront coding element.

Zoom lens systems with wavefront coding

An iris image capture device includes an optical arrangement that utilizes Wavefront Coding phase modifications to produce an optical image of a user iris and a detector for detecting the optical iris image and for converting the optical iris image into an electronic data signal. The iris image capture device also includes an image processor configured for processing the electronic data signal from the detector to reverse the Wavefront Coding phase modifications and to produce an electronic iris image of the user iris.

Iris image capture devices and associated systems

Low height imaging systems may include one or more optical channels and a detector array. Each of the optical channels may be associated with one or more detectors of the array, have one or more optical components and a restrictive ray corrector, and be configured to direct steeper incident angle field rays onto the detectors. Alternatively, each of the optical channels may be associated with at least one detector, and have an aspheric GRIN lens. Another low height imaging system has an array of detectors and a GRIN lens having a surface with wavefront coding and configured to direct steeper incident angle field rays onto more than one of the detectors. One method forms a lens with wavefront coding. The method includes positioning a lens in a mold; and curing material onto a surface of the lens to form an aspheric surface of the lens with wavefront coding.

Low height imaging system and associated methods

Switch devices for hitless tuning or reconfiguring an add or drop WDM filter. The input light is switched from the filter (where the desired channel is passed and the express channels are reflected) to a mirror where all channels are reflected. The switching is done in a continuous manner such that there is never an interruption in the channels reflected from the filter or mirror. While all channels are being reflected from the mirror, the filter is tuned to a different channel; or alternatively, is replaced by a filter which would drop a different channel. After the filter is tuned to the new channel, the input light is switched from the mirror back to the filter The switch may include a parallelogram prism or two sequential mirrors. The switch and the input beam are translated with respect to each other to switch the light between the filter and the mirror.

Hitless tuning apparatus and methods for add/drop filters

A precise, tunable, low loss add/drop filter for use in fiber optic communication systems utilizes a cascaded system of Mach Zender-like stages, along with reflective elements to return passed channels to the output pass&plus;add signal while transmitted signal(s) appear at the drop port. The optional add signal follows the reverse path of the drop signal and is added to the pass signal.

Tunable add/drop filter

A polarization insensitive tunable optical filter system combines an interference filter or the like with a quarter wave plate and a retro-reflector. The retro-reflector is situated and aligned to intercept light reflected from the filter, and the quarter wave plate is disposed between the filter and the retro-reflector. Hence, the pass signal reflected off the filter a first time passes through the quarter wave plate a first time, reflects off of the retro-reflector, passes through the quarter wave plate a second time, and reflects off of the filter a second time.

Polarization insensitive tunable optical filters

A 1&times;N optical switch according to the present invention switches between output fibers without the need for active alignment by utilizing two beam deflecting stages, for example first passing the input beam through a translating element and then through a beam angle adjusting element. The translating element directs the input beam toward the selected fiber, and the angle adjusting element directs the beam toward the core of the selected fiber.
