The average color, and excursions outside predetermined acceptable color limits, of non-solid-shade fabrics, such as denim, can be determined utilizing a filter colorimeter, an A/D convertor, and computer. A swatch of fabric having a length greater than its width is continuously moved past the colorimeter, and is continuously sampled at the rate of at least about 100 readings per second until the length of the entire swatch has been sampled and analog signals have been generated for all readings. Analog signals are continuously passed from the colorimeter to the A/D convertor, and from the convertor as digital signals to storage in the computer. After sampling is completed the stored digital signals are analyzed. The voltage of the electric light source of the colorimeter is monitored to calibrate the digital signals depending on the voltage to the light source. The swatch is moved with respect to the colorimeter by an assembly including swatch detectors, swatch moving apparatus including a pair of rollers, connected by a belt and driven by a motor, and a device for adjusting the swatch moving apparatus to accommodate swatches of different dimensions.

Continuous color measurement for small fabric samples

Pattern printed textile products, such as pillow cases and items of apparel, are produced in such a manner that the pattern is always properly positioned on the final product. The pattern is printed on a fabric web while it moves in a first direction, and in synchronization with the pattern printing a magnetic mark is disposed (e.g. jet printed) on the web in a known position adjacent the pattern in the direction of fabric movement. A number of marks may be printed, which define the perimeter portions of the fabric if cut into fabric panels. Subsequently, the magnetic marking on the fabric is detected, the fabric is stopped, and rough cut is made at a known position with respect to the mark. A fine cut later severs the mark from the rest of the fabric. Automatic hemming can take place during fine cutting, and after fine cutting and hemming, other steps are performed to turn the fabric into a final textile product.

Automatic means of accurately detecting and cutting fabric panels

An automatic method and apparatus for determining whether adequate size has been applied to yarn ends includes at least one photo-optic detector for counting the number of frays or hairs at various locations of a warp beam made up of yarn ends, comparing the count to a predetermined upper limit of acceptable frays or hairs and displaying the result. An alarm is enabled whenever the detected amount of frays of hairs exceeds the predetermined acceptable upper limit. A feedback control loop provides for the control of yarn transport speed, pressure roll force and/or size pump speed to maintain the amount of applied size within an acceptable range of values.

A method and apparatus provide for the effective automatic separation of two textile blanks, such as collars for knit sport shirts. Blanks are connected together by connector threads which extend generally in a first dimension. The blanks rest on a support surface, and are engaged by a presser foot which moves into contact with them and then moves them horizontally along the support surface to a first position. At the first position, the connector thread is sensed and severed at one edge of the blanks, and at the other edge of the blanks a pair of brushes mounted on a scissors linkage move into engagement with each other to grasp a loop of the connector thread between them. The scissors linkage is then moved in the first dimension away from the blanks to begin unravelling of the connector thread, and then the connector thread is released. As the thread is released it moves into operative association with a hook which pulls the thread through a yarn detector into operative association with a pair of rollers, which then engage the connector thread and unravel it. As the thread is unravelled, an air jet or vacuum acts on it to move it to a disposal area.

Automatic collar separation

In order to prevent a loom from continuing to operate after burnout of hot wire cutters for cutting selvage, circuitry is provided to automatically stop operation of the loom upon hot wire cutter burnout. The circuitry preferably includes a conventional loom-stopping device associated with drop wires (for detecting warp end breakage) already associated with the loom. A coil is disposed in series with the hot wire cutters and operatively associated with a reed switch and an indicator light which are connected in parallel with the drop wires. The coil, reed switch, and indicator light can be readily retrofit to pre-existing loom components, and the indicator light allows the operator to determine whether loom stoppage is a result of hot wire cutter burnout, or warp end breakage.

A device and method for deterring unauthorized use of xerographic copying machines of the type having a transparent platen on which a document having a primary image to be copied is registrable and which reproduces the primary image thereby creating a copy of the document, the device comprising a transparent substrate rigidly associated with the platen and bearing a secondary image thereon so that the primary and secondary images are concurrently reproducible on the document copy without affecting the visual perception of the primary image. The method comprises providing the platen with a secondary image, registering the document on the platen, and operating the copying machine so as to simultaneously reproduce the primary and secondary images.

A method and system for maintaining precise electrically neutral, positive or negative atmosphere in an area, such as a textile mill, by adding charged ions to air being pumped into that area, for example, through an air conditioning duct whereby at least two spaced apart grids are mounted in the duct with one connected to a positive high voltage source and the other connected to a negative high voltage source so that both grids produce ions and the voltages applied thereto are controlled to maintain the area atmosphere neutral, positively charged or negatively charged as required to dissipate an undesired charge generated in a manufacturing process.

Method and system for maintaining an electrically neutral atmosphere

A method and system for ionizing air passing through a metallic duct, e.g. to maintain precise electrically neutral, positive or negative atmosphere in an area, such as a textile mill, by adding charged ions to air being pumped into that area, with at least one electrical grid mounted in the duct by means of one or more insulator posts connecting the grid to a duct wall and adapted for connection to a DC high voltage source whereby buildup of conductive material such as grease or lint in a conductive path between the grid and duct wall is prevented. In one embodiment this is accomplished by providing an insulating sleeve within the duct and surrounding the grid, this sleeve by protecting against short circuits also permitting high currents to be safely used. In a second embodiment air deflectors mounted on the grid wall deflect the air in the duct away from the insulator posts, preferably with the aid of clean air injected between the air deflectors and duct wall.
