The present disclosure provides methods for functionalizing the surfaces of cellulose nanoparticles. In embodiments, nanoparticles are aerosolized, and then passed through a flow reactor where they are contacted with gaseous reactants to functionalize the surface of the nanoparticles. In other embodiments, the nanoparticles are aerosolized, and then passed through a plasma reactor where they are contacted with gaseous reactants to functionalize the surface of the nanoparticles. Once the functionalized nanoparticles are produced, they may be combined with polymers to form polymer composites having both a polymer and the functionalized nanoparticles. Systems for producing these functionalized nanoparticles, coupled with downstream polymer processing equipment for forming the polymer composites, are also provided.

Method for preparing modified nanocrystalline cellulose

Water filtration membranes are provided. Such membranes include polysaccharide fibers that have been modified to possess thiol groups thereon, resulting in materials that effectively bind heavy metal ions. The resulting fibers may be used by themselves or applied to a scaffold to form a membrane suitable for removing heavy metals from water, including groundwater.

Nanofibrous materials for heavy metal adsorption

Technologies are described for methods for producing a pattern of a material on a substrate. The methods may comprise receiving a patterned block copolymer on a substrate. The patterned block copolymer may include a first polymer block domain and a second polymer block domain. The method may comprise exposing the patterned block copolymer to a light effective to oxidize the first polymer block domain in the patterned block copolymer. The method may comprise applying a precursor to the block copolymer. The precursor may infuse into the oxidized first polymer block domain and generate the material. The method may comprise applying a removal agent to the block copolymer. The removal agent may be effective to remove the first polymer block domain and the second polymer block domain from the substrate, and may not be effective to remove the material in the oxidized first polymer block domain.

Patterning by area selective oxidation

This disclosure relates to a polymer having the formula: wherein x is between 1 and about 100 an y is between about 99 and about 1, and x+Y=about 100. The disclosure also includes the use of the polymer in photovoltaic devices.

Various azide functionalized poly(3-hexylthiophene)s and intermediates are disclosed and described, as well as method for making novel monomers that are synthesized and transformed into P3HT-Nfor use as organic conducting polymers in organic photovoltaic devices.
