The present invention relates to an improved oxygen sensor and particularly to oxygen sensors used as exhaust sensors in vehicles. The oxygen sensor, which has an improved lean-rich response time and operability at lower temperatures, has been chemically etched and electrically treated, or chemically etched with a non-hydrofluoric acid solution.

Electrical and chemical treatment of an oxygen sensor

The invention is related to a method of manufacturing a platinium electrode that has high porosity and current density of above 10 mA/cm2. The method comprises adding particles of a high temperature fugitive material such as carbon to the platinum ink, and subjecting the mixture to high temperature sintering to remove carbon powder thereby leaving small voids in the platinum.

A sensor with a glass seal between a planar sensing element in a tubular housing and the tubular housing, wherein the glass seal is maintained in radial compression over an entire temperature operating range of the sensor. The compressed seal has improved strength and durability, is self-limiting and is operable over a large temperature range and in an environment subject to jarring and vibrations.

A titania exhaust gas oxygen sensor including an alumina substrate, thin-film electrodes deposited thereon, and a thick-film titania layer deposited atop the electrodes. The electrodes comprise a noble metal (e.g., platinum) having a plurality of titania particles dispersed throughout for promoting bonding to the titania, resistive layer when the titania layer is fired.
