A computer-implemented method, according to one embodiment, includes: sending a request to a target server to initiate a unidirectional connection, receiving a reply indicating whether the target server is capable of hosting the unidirectional connection or indicating identification of a unidirectional port, initiating a unidirectional connection to the identified unidirectional port of the target server in response to the reply providing the identification of the unidirectional port, sending a request to begin sending data to the target server over the unidirectional connection, receiving a response from the target server indicating that the target server is ready to receive data over the unidirectional connection, sending data to the target server over the unidirectional connection, sending a termination message over the unidirectional connection in response to sending the data to the target server, terminating the unidirectional connection, and performing a next communication with the target server over the TCP/IP connection.

A computer-implemented method, according to one embodiment, includes: transferring data over a network using a first mode, at least one of randomly, periodically and continuously determining network performance characteristics during the transferring, applying a policy to the network performance characteristics determined during the transferring, continuing to use the first mode of data transfer in response to a result of applying the policy mandating continued use of the first mode, selecting a second mode of data transfer in response to the result of applying the policy mandating use of the second mode, and transferring data over the network using the second mode in response to selecting the second mode.

A migration request is processed to migrate metadata and storage management of data in a first storage environment to a second storage environment. The first metadata incorporated into the second metadata is modified to indicate first server information used by a second server to communicate with a first server to access the migrated data from the first storage media. The migration request is completed in response to incorporating the first metadata into the second metadata, wherein the first data objects remain in the first storage media after completing the migration request.

Provided are a computer program product, method, and system for migration of metadata and storage management of data in a first storage environment to a second storage environment. A migration request is processed to migrate metadata and storage management of data in a first storage environment to a second storage environment, wherein the first storage environment has a first storage server, a first storage media, and first metadata describing first data objects stored in the first storage media, and wherein the second storage environment has a second storage server, a second storage media, and second metadata for second data objects stored in the second storage media. The first metadata is copied to the second storage environment to incorporate with the second metadata. The first metadata incorporated into the second metadata is modified to indicate first server information used by the second server to communicate with the first server to access the migrated data from the first storage media. The migration request is completed in response to incorporating the first metadata into the second metadata, wherein the first data objects remain in the first storage media after completing the migration request.

A method for utilizing dispatch queues operates in a data processing system that has multiple processors, an operating system, and an application with multiple threads. According to that method, a dedicated dispatch queue and a general dispatch queue are created at an application level, with the dedicated dispatch queue being dedicated to a task control block (TCB) of the data processing system. In response to determining that the TCB is available and the dedicated dispatch queue is not empty, a thread is dispatched from the dedicated dispatch queue to the available TCB for execution. In response to determining that the TCB is available and the dedicated dispatch queue is empty, a thread is dispatched from the general dispatch queue to the available TCB for execution. In an illustrative embodiment, bound threads are distinguished from unbound threads, the bound threads are scheduled only on the dedicated dispatch queue, and the unbound threads are scheduled only on the general dispatch queue.
