An engine system includes: a first throttle valve; a turbocharger compressor disposed downstream of the first throttle valve; a charge air cooler disposed downstream of the turbocharger compressor; a second throttle valve located downstream of the turbocharger compressor; a purge inlet located downstream of the first throttle valve and configured to introduce fuel vapor from a fuel tank into intake air; and an engine control module configured to: maintain the first throttle valve in a fully open position; and selectively close the first throttle valve relative to the fully open position in response to receipt of a request to at least one of: purge fuel vapor from the fuel tank; and at least one of decrease and prevent icing of the charge air cooler.

Secondary throttle control systems and methods

A system includes a fuel control module and a valve control module. The fuel control module controls a fuel injector to stop fuel delivery to each cylinder of an engine in a vehicle when the vehicle is decelerating. The valve control module controls a valve actuator to actuate intake and exhaust valves of each cylinder of the engine between open and closed positions when fuel delivery to each cylinder of the engine is stopped. The valve control module controls the valve actuator to adjust an amount of airflow through each cylinder of the engine to a minimum amount when fuel delivery to each cylinder of the engine is initially stopped. The valve control module controls the valve actuator to adjust the amount of airflow through each cylinder of the engine to an amount greater than the minimum amount before fuel delivery to each cylinder of the engine is restarted.

System and method for controlling airflow through cylinders of an engine during a deceleration fuel cutoff event

A control system for a fuel cutoff system of a motor vehicle includes a fuel cutoff module that generates a fuel cutoff signal for disabling a supply of fuel to an engine, in response to the fuel cutoff module detecting a deceleration fuel cutoff (DFCO) event. The control system further includes an oxygen storage module determining an amount of oxygen accumulated in a catalyst and comparing this amount to an oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of the catalyst, in response to the fuel cutoff module determining the DFCO event. The control system further includes an intake valve timing module generating a phasing signal to actuate a plurality of cam phasers to reduce a flow rate of oxygen to the catalyst, in response to the fuel cutoff module determining the DFCO event and the oxygen storage module determining that the amount of oxygen stored in the catalyst is less than the OSC.

System and method for a motor vehicle with reduced fuel enrichment after a fuel cutoff event

An engine includes an air intake system, an exhaust system, a single-cylinder-sourced EGR system, an exhaust sensor that is disposed to monitor exhaust gas from the single one of the cylinders, and a diverter valve. A controller includes an instruction set that executable to determine operation of the engine in a fuel cut-off mode, discontinue fuel flow to the single one of the cylinders, divert exhaust gas from the single one of the cylinders to the air intake system, determine an airflow, temperature, and an equivalence ratio of the diverted exhaust gas from the single one of the cylinders, determine a mass flowrate of oxygen in the diverted exhaust gas, integrate the mass flowrate of oxygen in the diverted exhaust gas, and discontinue the diverting of the exhaust gas from the single one of the cylinders when the integrated mass flowrate of oxygen is greater than a threshold value.

Method and apparatus for controlling an internal combustion engine

Systems and methods are provided for avoiding intake air condensation. A thermal management system includes a propulsion system with an internal combustion engine and an electric machine. A power electronics system delivers power to the electric machine. A fluid circuit is configured to cool the power electronics system. Intake air of the internal combustion engine is circulated through an intake air heat exchanger. A controller operates the fluid circuit to collect heat from the power electronics system and to selectively deliver the heat to the intake air heat exchanger.

Integrated power electronics and intake air thermal management system and method

A method of operating an engine having an intake manifold, an exhaust manifold, a crankshaft, a plurality of working cylinders each having at least one intake valve and at least one exhaust valve, and an exhaust gas recirculation conduit providing fluid communication between the intake manifold and the exhaust manifold. The method includes: while the engine is operating, in response to a no engine torque request, deactivating a number of the working cylinders such that none of the deactivated working cylinders are fired and no air is pumped through the deactivated working cylinders as the crankshaft rotates, operating at least one of the plurality of working cylinders that is not deactivated to pump air through the non-deactivated working cylinder, and controlling gas flow through the exhaust gas recirculation conduit to circulate air pumped through the non-deactivated working cylinder to the intake manifold.

Deceleration cylinder cut-off (DCCO) methodology with enhanced EGR

A fuel control module controls fuel injection of an engine based on a predetermined lean air/fuel ratio. The predetermined lean air/fuel ratio is fuel lean relative to a stoichiometric air/fuel ratio for the fuel. A cylinder control module selectively deactivates opening of intake and exhaust valves of M cylinders of the engine to increase removal of nitrogen oxide (NOx) from exhaust. M is an integer greater than 0 and less than a total number of cylinders of the engine. The fuel control module further: disables fueling of the M cylinders while opening of the intake and exhaust valves of the M cylinders is deactivated; and, while fueling of the M cylinders is disabled and opening of the intake and exhaust valves of the M cylinders is deactivated, controls fuel injection of other cylinders based on a predetermined rich air/fuel ratio that is fuel rich relative to the stoichiometric air/fuel ratio.

Engine control systems and methods for nitrogen oxide reduction

Disclosed are sliding cam actuators, methods for making and using such actuators, and motor vehicles with internal combustion engines employing sliding cam actuators. A sliding cam actuator is disclosed with two actuator pins projecting from an actuator housing. These pins move from retracted to extended positions and engage a shift barrel on a sliding camshaft. An actuator assembly moves each actuator pin to its extended position into engagement with the shift barrel to thereby slide the camshaft to a different location. An actuator shank is attached to the actuator housing and engaged with the actuator pins. Moving the first actuator pin to its extended position moves the actuator shank in one direction, which moves the second actuator pin towards its retracted position. Moving the second actuator pin to its extended position causes the actuator shank to move in another direction, which moves the first actuator pin towards its retracted position.

Multi-step sliding cam actuators for internal combustion engine assembly

A combustion system for use with one or more cylinder bores of an internal combustion engine includes at least one cylinder head defining first and second intake ports in fluid communication with the one or more cylinder bores. A flap is adjustably connected to the at least one cylinder head. The flap includes a first flap portion cooperating with the first intake port extending from an arm and a second flap portion cooperating with the second intake port extending from the arm and disposed adjacent the first flap portion. A controller in electrical communication with an actuator monitors the condition of the engine and actuates the flap to position the first and second flap portions between first and second positions to create a first combustion condition and a second combustion condition.

System and method for engine combustion

A method for starting an engine includes sensing a triggering event and monitoring pressure in a fuel rail. A cam shaft of the engine is oscillated with a cam phaser. The cam shaft does not complete a full rotation during the oscillation. A fuel rail pump is operated with the oscillating cam shaft until the monitored pressure in the fuel rail reaches a minimum level, and the engine is started after reaching the minimum level.

Engine startup method

A cylinder head assembly includes a first member coupled to an engine block and a second member coupled to the first member. The first member defines a first port in communication with a first cylinder and a second port in communication with a second cylinder. The second member defines a longitudinally extending portion located on a first lateral half of the first member. A first control passage and a second control passage are defined between the first member and the longitudinally extending portion of the second member. The second member defines a wall separating the first and second control passages from one another.

A system includes a fuel cutoff module and a cylinder deactivation module. The fuel cutoff module generates a fuel cutoff signal when a deceleration fuel cutoff condition occurs, wherein fueling to M cylinders of an engine is disabled based on the fuel cutoff signal, and wherein M is an integer greater than or equal to one. The cylinder deactivation module deactivates the M cylinders in response to the fuel cutoff signal.

An engine assembly may include a cylinder head and a fluid control assembly. The cylinder head may include first and second walls opposite one another and extending from a base region defining a cavity. The cylinder head may define a first oil passage extending through an interior surface defining the cavity. The fluid control assembly may include a first oil control valve and a first conduit. The first oil control valve may be fixed to the base region and may define a first port in fluid communication with the first oil passage and a second port in fluid communication with a second oil passage in the cylinder head. The first conduit may extend from the first oil control valve toward the first wall and may provide the fluid communication between the first port of the oil control valve and the first oil passage in the cylinder head.

Modular engine assembly and fluid control assembly for hydraulically-actuated mechanism

A cam bearing cap may include a first bearing cap region, a pump mounting region, an oil inlet, and an oil outlet. The first bearing cap region may extend over and secure a first camshaft to an engine assembly. The pump mounting region may extend from the first bearing cap region and may have a secondary oil pump mounted thereto. The oil inlet may extend through the pump mounting region and may provide communication between the secondary oil pump and an oil supply. The oil outlet may extend through the pump mounting region and may provide communication between the secondary oil pump and a hydraulically actuated engine component.
