A generator includes an internal combustion engine including an engine block including a cylinder including a piston, a crankshaft configured to rotate about a crankshaft axis in response to movement by the piston, and a spark plug configured to periodically generate a spark to ignite fuel in the cylinder to control the movement of the piston. The generator further includes an alternator including a rotor and a stator, the rotor configured to rotate with the rotation of the crankshaft to generate alternating current electrical power, a controller configured to control a rate of fuel supply to the internal combustion engine, and a switch configured to selectively enable the flow of a first type of fuel into the cylinder and disable the flow of a second type of fuel, wherein the controller is configured to receive an indication of a fuel type based on a position of the switch.

Inverter generator

A standby generator includes a standby housing defining a cavity and an internal combustion engine. The engine includes an engine block including a cylinder comprising a piston, an engine housing at least partially covering the engine block, and a crankshaft configured to rotate about a vertical crankshaft axis in response to movement by the piston. The standby generator also includes an alternator configured to generate alternating current electrical power, a controller comprising a rectifier configured to convert the alternating current to a direct current and an inverter configured to convert the direct current to a clean alternating current electrical power, and a transfer switch configured to receive the clean alternating current electrical power from the controller and at least one of grid, solar, or battery power, and configured to supply power to an electrical load. The internal combustion engine, the alternator, and the controller are positioned within the cavity.

A method of exercising a generator includes detecting a temperature of the generator by a temperature sensor, if the temperature of the generator is above a predetermined temperature, activating, by a controller, a starter motor of the generator, and performing, by the controller, an exercise test, and if the temperature of the generator is below the predetermined temperature, not activating, by the controller, the starter motor.

A method and system for exercising a standby generator is disclosed. The standby generator can be exercised in at least two different exercise cycles, including an express exercise cycle and an extended exercise cycle. The system and method operates the generator for an express exercise cycle having a first duration when the ambient temperature at or near the standby generator exceeds a minimum threshold temperature. If the ambient temperature does not exceed the minimum threshold temperature, the express exercise cycle does not begin. In addition to the express exercise cycle, the engine of the standby generator is started and run for an extended exercise cycle having a duration that exceeds the duration of the express exercise cycle. The extended exercise cycles are separated by a first interval while the express exercise cycles are separated by a second interval, where the first interval is longer than the second interval.

A method of exercising a generator includes detecting a temperature of the generator, if the temperature is above a predetermined temperature, activating a starter motor and starting an engine of the generator, and performing a first exercise test, and if the temperature is below the predetermined temperature, activating the starter motor without starting the engine of the generator, and performing a second exercise test.

A standby generator includes an engine including an output shaft, an alternator, and an enclosure including a base and a number of walls extending from the base including a front wall, a rear wall, a first wall, and a second wall. The standby generator includes an intake opening configured to allow air to be drawn into the enclosure and an exhaust opening configured to allow heated air and exhaust gases to be expelled from the enclosure. The intake opening is provided on the rear wall proximate the first wall and the exhaust opening is provided on the front wall proximate the second wall. The air drawn into the enclosure at the first intake opening directly flows over the engine and is expelled through the exhaust opening.

The output shaft extends toward the alternator and the left wall. The standby generator includes an intake opening configured to allow air to be drawn into the enclosure and an exhaust opening configured to allow heated air and exhaust gases to be expelled from the enclosure. A standby generator includes a base and a number of walls extending from the base including a wall having a removable panel. A cover is coupled to the wall having the removable panel and is moveable between a closed position and an open position. When the cover in the open position, the removable panel may be removed from the standby generator.
