A film structure including at least a base layer containing a thermoplastic polymer and at least an outer layer containing a low melting point polymer. Methods of manufacturing the film structure, including the steps of coextruding melts corresponding to the individual layers of the film structure through a die and thereafter: simultaneously biaxially stretching the coextruded film sheet; or sequentially biaxially stretching the coextruded film sheet, wherein the machine-direction orientation (MDO) is performed with a radiant-heated MDO stretcher. An extrusion-coated film structure exhibiting strong bond adhesion, and a method of manufacturing the same are also provided.

Thermoplastic film structures with a low melting point outer layer

The present invention is directed to a biaxially oriented multi-layer film which comprises: (a) a core layer comprising a syndiotactic propylene homopolymer; and (b) at least one additional layer adjacent to the core layer comprising a polymer which is an ethylene or a propylene homopolymer, ethylene copolymer or terpolymer containing comonomers of propylene and/or butene-1. Optionally, there can be a skin layer applied to the exposed surface of the outer layer. The skin layer and/or the at least one additional layer is a polyolefin selected from the group consisting of isotactic polypropylene, polyethylene, ethylene-propylene random copolymer, ethylene-propylene block copolymer or ethylene-propylene-butene-1 terpolymer.

A sealable film comprising a core layer comprising an olefin polymer wherein the core layer comprises the interior of the film; a separable layer exterior to the core layer, wherein the separable layer comprises a material or blend selected from the group consisting of impact copolymers; thermoplastic polyolefins; blends of impact copolymers and LLDPE's; blends of two or more incompatible polymers; and mixtures thereof; an optic improving layer exterior to the core layer and the separable layer, wherein the optic improving layer comprises a polymer having at least one of modulus, hardness, and/or beam strength being higher than the material of the separable layer; and a sealing layer exterior to the core layer, the separable layer, and the optic improving layer, wherein the sealing layer comprises a polymer.

Sealable film

A multilayer film has a core layer, such as a biaxially oriented polypropylene layer, and an adhesion promoting layer formed from a graft copolymer of syndiotactic polypropylene and a monomer, such as maleic anhydride, which has hydrophilic functionality. The adhesion promoting layer may be metallized to provide a barrier to oxygen and water vapor. The adhesion promoting layer may also render the surface of the film more receptive to printing inks, laminating adhesives, primeness overcoats and the like.

A method for producing an improved coextruded polymeric film is disclosed. First, a base layer containing a polymeric matrix and at least one additional layer on at least one side of the base layer are coextruded. If the coextruded polymeric film is to be opaque, the base layer also contains at least one cavitating agent. Next, the coextruded multi-layer film is cooled. Finally, the coextruded multi-layer film is oriented in at least the machine direction (MD). At least the base layer of the coextruded polymeric film contains a fluoropolymer. The inclusion of the fluoropolymer in at least the base layer of the coextruded polymeric film provides a more even distribution of polymer flow through a die, which in turns leads to improved film gauge uniformity.

Method for producing improved polymeric films

The present invention is a high barrier multilayer film particularly suitable for packaging. The high barrier multilayer film is a film including (a) a core substrate layer having an isotactic polypropylene produced from Ziegler-Natta catalysts, and (b) an adjacent layer on at least one surface of the core substrate layer, wherein the adjacent layer (b) comprises an isotactic polypropylene produced from metallocene catalysts; or the high barrier multilayer film includes (a&prime;) a core substrate layer having an isotactic polypropylene produced from metallocene catalysts, and (b&prime;) an adjacent layer on at east one surface of the core substrate layer, wherein the adjacent layer (b&prime;) comprises an isotactic polypropylene produced from Ziegler-Natta catalysts.

A multi-layer film includes a base layer comprising a polyolefin and at least one additional layer comprising a metallocene-catalyzed syndiotactic polypropylene, wherein the base layer and the at least one additional layer comprising a metallocene-catalyzed syndiotactic polypropylene are not suitable for use as a heat sealable film. The multi-layer films of the present invention have improved metallizable surfaces and the metallized films exhibit excellent gas (e.g., oxygen and water vapor) barrier properties, as well as good pick off, optical properties (optical density, haze, and gloss), and coefficient of friction (COF).

A cast film comprises a layer comprising a metallocene-catalyzed substantially syndiotactic propylene polymer. Optionally, the cast film has on at least one side an outer skin layer.

The present invention relates to a biaxially oriented multilayer film structure having (i) a core substrate of high density polyethylene; and (ii) an additional layer of syndiotactic polypropylene on at least one surface of the core substrate. A product capable of absorbing unwanted odors and unpleasant flavors, is sealed from said odors and flavors by being sealingly overwrapped with a film comprising an oriented film of a blend of polypropylene and a polymerized polyterpene selected from the group consisting of polymerized d-limonene, polymerized beta-pinene, polymerized synthetic approximation of d-limonene and beta-pinene and mixtures thereof.

Multi-layer barrier film

An oriented multi-layer film comprised of a core layer comprising a metallocene-catalyzed substantially isotactic propylene polymer, a first additional layer on a side of the core layer, and a second additional layer on a side of the core layer which side is opposite to the side having the first additional layer. In one embodiment of the invention, the core layer includes a polymerized alicyclic hydrocarbon such as polyterpene.

Multi-layer films with core layer of metallocene-catalyzed polypropylene

The invention is directed to an oriented multi-layer film which comprises a voided layer and at least one non-voided layer on at least one surface of the voided layer. In one embodiment, the voided layer comprises a Ziegler-Natta or metallocene-catalyzed substantially isotactic propylene polymer in a polymer matrix with a cavitation initiator. In a second embodiment, the non-voided layer comprises a Ziegler-Natta or metallocene-catalyzed substantially isotactic polypropylene polymer. In a third embodiment, both the voided core layer and at least one non-voided layer comprise a metallocene-catalyzed substantially isotactic polypropylene polymer.
