A pedal drive system for a bicycle includes a front spiral cone pulley and a rear pulley. The front spiral cone pulley is attached to a crank arm, and the rear pulley is attached to a rear wheel on a bicycle in some embodiments. A power cable, or tension linkage, extends between the front spiral cone pulley and the rear pulley. The front spiral cone pulley is angularly moveable relative to the first crank arm such that the radial position of the point of engagement between the power cable and the front spiral cone pulley may be selectively manipulated for controlling the gear ratio between the front spiral cone pulley and the rear pulley. In some embodiments, the rear pulley is also a spiral cone pulley.

Spiral cone pulley reciprocal pedal drive system and methods

An elevating system elevates a payload platform between a first position and a second position, such elevating system having a stowed position, an operational position, and a fully-deployed position. The elevating system includes an extendable actuator rod pivotably mounted on a frame and a link pivotably mounted to the extendable actuator rod and pivotably mounted to the payload platform. The extendable actuator rod and the link are moved from the stowed position to the operational position by increasing the length of the extendable actuator rod from a first length to a second length. The extendable actuator rod and the link are moved from the operational position to the fully-deployed position by increasing the length of the extendable actuator rod from the second length to a third length. The extendable actuator rod and the link elevate the payload platform from the first position to the second position as the extendable actuator rod and link are moved from the operational position to the fully deployed position.

Elevating system

An actuator (10) for effecting relative pivotal movement between two structures (12, 14) includes a bent beam member (18) having a first portion (20) rotatably secured to one structure and a second portion (22) supported for rotation and eccentric revolution by a housing (42) grounded to the other structure. Index gears (64, 66) assure eccentric revolution of the beam member (18) in an opposite direction in response to rotation of the bent beam member to produce relative pivotal movement between the structures (12, 14). In the first two embodiments, the actuators (10, 120) incorporate internal hydraulic or electric drive arrangements. In other embodiments, the actuators (150, 172, 250, 270) employ various planetary type gear arrangements to achieve even greater mechanical advantage. In the last embodiment, both portions (304, 306) of the bent beam member (302) of the actuator (300) are driven and supported for eccentric revolution.

Vehicular steering apparatus employing an eccentric actuator

A propulsion system for vertical take off and landing aircraft includes a forward compressor fan (40) and an aft compressor fan (42) downstream of the forward fan and in series flow communication with the forward fan. The forward and aft fans are positioned in a central duct (26). A gas turbine engine (44) is in series flow with the forward and aft fans for driving the fans. The forward fan, aft fan and turbine engine are interconnected by a common shaft (50). A forward diverter structure (100) is positioned downstream of the forward fan and is movable between a first position for diverting exhaust from the forward fan downwardly relative to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft while simultaneously permitting the introduction of air behind the forward diverter structure but ahead of the aft fan and a second position wherein the exhaust from the forward fan is channeled through the aft fan and turbine. An aft diverter (160) is positioned downstream of the aft fan and is movable between a first position wherein the diverter directs exhaust from the aft fan downwardly relative to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft and a second position wherein the exhaust is directed longitudinally from the aircraft.

Tandem fan series flow VSTOL propulsion system

Eccentric actuator

An apparatus for causing relative movement of first and second structures about a pivot axis is disclosed wherein a rotatable, elongated member has first and second portions which respectively extend from the pivot axis toward the first and second structures. The second portion of the member extends rotatably within a housing which is also rotatable with respect to the second structure. The axis of rotation of the member second portion within the housing is skewed from the axis or rotation of its first portion relative to the first structure by an angle .theta. and is also skewed by an equal angle from the axis of rotation of the housing relative to the second structure. Simultaneous rotation of the housing and member in opposite rotational directions produces arcuate movement of the member first portion and the first structure, about the pivot axis, relative to the second structure.
