Wobble engine

A glass sheet pressing and quenching apparatus including an open center ring having a shape generally corresponding to the shape of the glass sheet and a top support surface extending generally horizontally and conforming to the desired surface contour of the glass sheet. A plurality of flat insulating platelets are removably mounted on the top support surface to define an accurate glass contact surface having low thermal conductivity. The insulating platelets may include a plurality of horizontally inwardly spaced projections with passageways therebetween for communicating quench air therethrough. The ring is mounted on a support frame via a plurality of leveling assemblies, each of which include a mounting plate secured to the ring and adapted to receive a threaded connector having a spherical end portion which is mounted for limited movement within a generally spherical mounting receptacle secured to the support frame. One or more slots are cut into the threads, parallel to the center line of the connector. A spring loaded plunger is mounted in the mounting plate to interfere with the slots in the shaft, thereby providing a detent. The shape of the ring can be modified by controlled adjustment of one or more of the leveling assemblies.

Glass sheet press forming and quenching ring

A glass sheet tempering system (10) disclosed comprises a single station heater and quench that includes a heating source (16) for heating the glass sheet (12) and also an air supply (18) for supplying quenching air to temper the heated glass sheet (12). The heating source (16) and air supply (18) are defined by a pair of spaced and opposed plenums (20,20') that provide heating and quenching of the glass sheet (12) generally in one location without having to transport the glass sheet (12) between separate heating and quenching stations.

Combination heater quench

A heated glass sheet topside support device (22,22',22a,22a') is disclosed as including horizontally extending lower and upper plates (38,46) connected by a set of vertically extending passage members embodied by tubes (54) or plate members (54a) to define passages (55,55a,55a'). The support device also includes first and second manifolds (56,58) for supplying pressurized gas and a vacuum through first and second sets of holes (42,42a,42a';44,44a,44a') in the lower plate so as to thereby support a heated glass sheet below the lower plate without any engagement. In one construction, the pressurized gas is supplied through a chamber (48,48a) between the plates through a set of shorter tubes (80,80a) mounted within the first set of holes (42,42a) in the lower plate (38,38a), and the vacuum is drawn from the upper side of the upper plate (46,46a) through the holes (52,52a) therein and through the passages (55,55a) and the second set of holes (44,44a) in the lower plate. In another construction, the vacuum is drawn through the chamber (48,48a') between the plates through the first set of holes (42,42a') in the lower plate (38,38a'), and the pressurized gas is supplied through the holes (52,52a') therein and through the passages (55,55a') and the second set of holes (44,44a') in the lower plate. Each embodiment of the topside support device is supported by fused silica posts (86) that preferably have upper ends including inverted cup-shaped members (102) on which the topside support device is slidably mounted by an associated spherical bearing (106). Positioners (118) for the silica posts (86) and support device locators (134) cooperate in supporting and positioning the topside support device at the proper location.

Heated glass sheet topside support device

An improved glass sheet quench (14) is disclosed as including opposed blastheads (26,28) each of which includes elongated plenum housings (34) including openings (42) positioned therealong in a spaced relationship and oriented to supply jets (44) of quenching gas angularly in opposite directions from the plenum housing toward a heated glass sheet therebetween for impingement therewith to cool the glass sheet. This angular supply of the quenching jets permits the use of half as many plenum housings as is ordinarily needed such that the plenum housings can be spaced farther from each other to provide a greater flow area for spent quenching gas to escape from between the blastheads. Flat glass embodiments of the quench (14,14a) and bent glass embodiments of the quench (14' 14a) are disclosed and may incorporate sheet metal and tube plenum housings (34) or drilled metal bar plenum housings (34').

Glass sheet quench including oppositely angled jets

A composite blasthead (18,20,70,72,118,120) for a quench station (16) of a glass sheet tempering system (10) is disclosed as including outer layers (28,71,73,128,128') and an inner layer comprising inserts (30,32,34,74,76,130,130') therebetween for defining passages (36,80,82,136) through which cooling gas is supplied to a glass sheet in order to provide tempering. All of the inserts have inner end portions (38,40,42,81,138,138') that cooperate to define inlets (44,86,144,144') to the passages and also have outer end portions (46,48,50,88,146,146') that cooperate to define passage outlets (52,90,152,152') through which the quenching gas exits. All of the passages have a circular cross section along substantially the entire length of the passages. All of the inserts are of a configuration such that the passages of each blasthead are aligned with the passages of the other blasthead, so that the gas impinges on the glass surfaces in an opposed relationship with a uniform pattern over said surfaces thereby optimizing the degree of glass tempering.
