Substantially waterless self-emulsifiable biodegradable chemical softening compositions are provided comprising a mixture of an ester-functional quaternary ammonium compound and a polyhydroxy compound. Preferred biodegradable ester-functional quaternary ammonium compounds include diesterdialkyl dimethyl ammonium salts such as diester ditallow dimethyl ammonium chloride, diester di(touch hydrogenated)tallow dimethyl ammonium chloride and diester di(hydrogenated)tallow dimethyl ammonium chloride. Preferred polyhydroxy compounds are selected from the group consisting of glycerol, polyglycerols having a weight average molecular weight from about 150 to about 800 and polyoxyethylene glycols and polyoxypropylene glycols having a weight average molecular weight from about 200 to about 4000. The substantially waterless self-emulsifiable biodegradable chemical softening compositions are prepared by mixing the ester-functional quaternary ammonium compound with the polyhydroxy compound at a specific temperature range wherein the polyhydroxy compound is miscible with the ester-functional quaternary ammonium compound. The resulting stable solid or concentrated fluid mixture can then be economically shipped to the consumer or ultimate user. The ultimate users of the chemical softening composition simply dilute the mixture with a liquid carrier (e.g., water) to form an aqueous dispersion suitable for treating fibrous cellulosic material. The substantially waterless self-emulsifiable biodegradable chemical softening compositions disclosed herein are primarily intended for softening disposable paper products such as tissues and towels.

Substantially waterless self-emulsifiable chemical softening compositions are provided comprising a mixture of a quaternary ammonium compound and a polyhydroxy compound. Preferred quaternary ammonium compounds include dialkyl dimethyl ammonium salts such as di(hydrogenated)tallow dimethyl ammonium chloride, di(hydrogenated)tallow dimethyl ammonium methyl sulfate. Preferred polyhydroxy compounds are selected from the group consisting of glycerol, polyglycerols having a weight average molecular weight of from about 150 to about 800 and polyoxyethylene glycols and polyoxypropylene glycols having a weight average molecular weight from about 200 to 4000. Stable colloidal dispersions of 1-triacontanol in water are disclosed. The dispersions are capable of more consistently stimulating plant growth by allowing for the uniform application of a large number of very small crystalline triacontanol particles. The dispersions preferably also contain an anionic, cationic, zwitterionic or polyfunctional single bond nonionic surfactant dispersing agent.

Certain oxaalkanoate zwitterionic surfactant-type compounds and their esters are not only excellent detergents, but also provide superior oral therapy for ulceration of the gastric mucosa. The oxaalkanoate zwitterionic compounds are especially preferred in the management of both gastric and duodenal ulcers.

Zwitterionic surfactant compounds provide effective therapy for ulceration of the gastric mucosa. The tendency of aspirin and other salicylate-based drugs to cause ulceration of the gastric mucosa is also reduced by administration of such drugs in conjunction with certain zwitterionic surfactants. The ammoniohexanoate zwitterionics are especially preferred in the management of both gastric and duodenal ulcers.

Certain oxaalkanoate zwitterionic surfactant-type compounds and their esters provide oral therapy for ulceration of the gastric mucosa. The oxaalkanoate zwitterionic compounds are especially preferred compositions used in the management of both gastric and duodenal ulcers.

Controlled release articles which regulate the concentration of a surfactant compound at a useful level in an environment external to said articles are provided. The articles are especially adapted for use in or on the bodies of animals, including humans, to provide controlled release of surfactants having biological activity, for example, non-hormonal contraceptives.
