Injection moldable homopolymers, copolymers, and terpolymers are prepared from fully or partially acylated aromatic diamines, aliphatic diamines or a mixture of these and aromatic tricarboxylic anhydride compounds or mixtures of tricarboxylic anhydrides and dicarboxylic acids. These polymers are improved by the addition of calcium moieties such as oxide, calcium acetate and calcium hydroxide. These polymers are useful for the preparation of injection molded articles.

A novel process for the preparation of injection moldable polymers prepared from diacylated aliphatic diamines, tricarboxylic anhydride compounds and aliphatic primary diamines. These polymers are useful for the preparation of injection molded articles and fibers. A process for enhancing the crystallization of these polymers by the addition of nucleating agents is also disclosed.

Injection moldable copolymers are prepared from fully or partially acylated aromatic diamines and aromatic tricarboxylic anhydride compounds or mixtures of tricarboxylic anhydrides and dicarboxylic acids. These copolymers are useful for the preparation of injection molded articles and fibers.

Novel tailor made copolymers and terpolymers of the amide-imide type are prepared from tricarboxylic acid anhydride compounds, N,N'-diacylated diamines, N-acylated diamines, and primary diamines. These copolymers and terpolymers are useful for preparing injection molded articles of superior properties. A novel process for the manufacture of amide-imide copolymers and terpolymers is disclosed wherein the imide, imide-imide, amide, and amide-imide moieties incorporated into the polymer backbone are controlled by acylating the amine functionality which is to form the amide and amide-amide moieties while reacting directly those diamines with a tricarboxylic anhydride compound which are intended to form the imide and imide-imide moieties.

Novel amino-substituted derivatives of 4-t-butylphthalic anhydride are used as monomers to produce novel polyimides with improved solubility characteristics. Increased solubility in organic solvents permits these polyimides to be used in coating applications where structurally similar polyimides could not otherwise be used.

Process of producing an amideimide polymer without using an acid having an acyl halide group which comprises reacting a composition comprising an aromatic diprimary amine and a tricarboxylic acid compound in an alcoholic solvent comprising an alkanol containing from 4 to 10 carbon atoms. In those cases where only diprimary aromatic amine is reacted, a tertiary amine is required. If desired, a glycol can be present.
