An engine powered hand-held power tool and engine lubrication method is provided, the power tool being intended to be carried by an operator during use. The power tool has a frame, including a handle to be grasped by the operator, an implement affixed to the frame having a rotary input member, and a small four-cycle, lightweight, internal combustion engine attached to the frame for driving the implement. The four-cycle engine has a lightweight aluminum alloy engine block having a cylindrical bore and an enclosed oil reservoir formed therein. A crankshaft is rotatably mounted in the engine block for rotation about a crankshaft axis. A piston reciprocates within the bore and is connected to the crankshaft by a connecting rod. An oil splasher driven by the crankshaft intermittently engages the oil within the enclosed oil reservoir to splash-lubricate the engine. The engine is provided with a cylinder head assembly defining a compact combustion chamber having a pair of overhead intake and exhaust ports and cooperating intake and exhaust valves. A lightweight, high-powered engine is thereby provided having relatively low HC and CO emissions.

A compact, lightweight and easy-to-use wheeled lawn care unit comprising a two-wheeled carriage, a power source, plurality of tools which may be alternatively connected to the power source, a handle and a boom connecting the selected tool to the power source. The power source is pivotally connected to the carriage at a location within its footprint. The unit has a low center of gravity by placing the power source pivot and center of gravity within a cylinder defined by the wheels. The boom extends horizontally from the power source and is of a split boom configuration which allows selective rotation for the boom portions relative to one another. An edger can be selected for the unit, which includes a spring-loaded wheel. The edger may be rotated from a non-working position where the edger blade does not contact the ground to a working position by rocking a handle behind the carriage forward against the bias of the spring. A second more compact version has the shield positioned on the boom.

Line feed mechanism for a line trimmer

A blower nozzle (30) and a vacuum nozzle (40) extending in parallel with each other are connected to a main body (10) housing therein a fan (19) and a motor (20). The main body (10) is provided with a dust bag (50). In a vacuum mode, air is directly sucked from the vacuum nozzle and is introduced into the dust bag by the rotation of the fan. In a blower mode, the air similarly sucked from the vacuum nozzle is directed toward the blower nozzle.

A disc sander having a scroll type vane pump embodied in a shroud enclosing the back side of a sanding disc. The inlet ports of the pump are coupled by a manifold to a location adjacent to the front face of the sanding disc at a location where the sanding dust and debris are generated. A tortious serpentine path is provided about the periphery of the pump housing which reduces pump noise and increases pump efficiency. The fins of the vane pump are provided on the back side of the sanding disc.

Parallel tube type, gasoline powered, blower/vacuums with improved versatility are provided. In one possible feature, a flapper throttle adjacent to the housing for controlling the engine is pivotable from side-to-side with respect to an elongate handle. The elongate handle is sufficiently long to allow a plurality of gripping positions, while the flapper throttle is sufficiently long to allow the operator to access the flapper throttle from different gripping positions on the handle. In another possible feature, a pivotable lever throttle is provided at an interface of the handle forward portion and a transverse grip portion at the handle forward portion end. The lever throttle has a first end accessible to the operator when gripping the transverse grip portion, and a second end accessible to the operator when gripping the handle forward portion. In another possible feature, a blower/vacuum is provided with a rear handle that increases blower/vacuum versatility in that the operator has a plurality of gripping choices available to him.

Gasoline powered parallel tube blower/vacuum

A hand-held blower and adjustable blower nozzle attachment is disclosed for providing a variable rate air flow discharge from the nozzle attachment. The blower includes a housing having a handle, a discharge portion and a motor with an operatively connected impeller within a chamber connected to the discharge portion. A tubular body is attached to the discharge portion at one end and a blower nozzle attachment at a second end. The blower nozzle attachment includes at least one constrictor flap provided within the nozzle attachment body to change the air flow rate between a low air velocity rate in a first position and a higher air velocity rate in at least one second position. The adjustable blower nozzle attachment is provided with at least one aperture corresponding to the at least one constrictor flap for adjustment of the flap between the first and the at least one second position. A control is rotatably mounted to the nozzle body and includes a member mounted within the nozzle body to return the at least one constrictor flap from the at least one second position to the first position. Alternatively, the control may be slidably mounted to the nozzle attachment body. A member is pivotally connected to both the control and the at least one constrictor flap to move the at least one constrictor flap between the first and the at least one second position.

A router table assembly includes a removable throat plate having a frame with a generally-planar upper surface, and an opening formed in the frame's upper surface. A disc, supported within the opening for rotation about a first axis, includes a through-hole which is sized to permit extension therethrough of a routing bit along a second axis parallel to the first axis. A graduated scale on the frame adjacent to the disc cooperates with a reference mark on the disk to provide an indication of the displacement of the bit's second axis relative to a reference edge on the working surface. A clamp secures the disc against rotation after the disc has been rotated within the frame to position the bit's second axis a desired distance from the reference edge. A fence is secured in one of a plurality of parallel-spaced positions relative to the reference edge.

A battery powered tool includes a housing adapted to carry a battery. A shaft having first and second ends is connected to the housing at the first end thereof. A first mechanical joint is adapted for rotatably receiving and supporting an attachment. The first mechanical joint is mounted at the second end of the shaft. The first electrical connector contained within the first mechanical joint is adapted to cooperate with a second electrical connector in the attachment to provide electric thereto. A first electrical conductor extends within the shaft from the housing to the first electrical connector for carrying electric current from the battery to operate the attachment. A second electrical connector engages with the first electrical connector, and is connected to a boom. A second electrical conductor extends within the boom, and the other end of the boom carries a hedge trimmer, a line trimmer, a pruner, a blower or an extension.

Attachment system for battery powered tool

A line trimmer head is provided including a rotatable drive shaft and a housing mounted to the drive shaft for rotation therewith. The housing has an open end and at least one peripheral aperture formed through the housing. A spool subassembly is positioned at least partially within the housing adjacent the open end of the housing. The subassembly includes a spool having at least one flange extending radially outwardly from the periphery thereof, a cog ring secured to the spool, and a ratchet and pawl assembly formed between the cog ring and spool. The ratchet and pawl assembly allows rotation of the spool in a first direction with respect to the cog ring for winding line around the spool while preventing spool rotation in a second direction opposite the first direction to facilitate line feed bumping and line trimming operations. In an alternative embodiment, the pawl is integrally molded with the spool to eliminate the separate spring-pawl assembly.
