Resveratrol, a component of a variety of common edible plants, including peanuts and red grapes, is a phytoestrogen. Resveratrol inhibits proliferation of skin epidermal cells (keratinocytes) and stimulates their differentiation. Resveratrol was also found to inhibit melanin production by skin cells and to alleviate skin irritation that may be caused by alpha-hydroxy acids. Resveratrol is useful in improving the appearance of wrinkled, lined, dry, flaky, aged or photodamaged skin and improving skin thickness, elasticity, flexibility, radiance, glow and plumpness.

Cosmetic compositions containing resveratrol

Oil-in-water emulsions can be formed using surfactants with biospecific headgroups. Emulsion droplets adhere to surfaces of microorganisms or to various biological surface bearing appropriate adhesins, thus delivering surfactant materials directly to various surfaces. Lipophilic materials and essential oils can be targeted in this way. The emulsions may be incorporated into oral hygiene non-food compositions or compositions for topical application to skin, hair or nails.

Biospecific emulsions

Oral hygiene antiplaque compositions which include as an active ingredient a glyceroglycolipid having an amine or ether linkage and containing a .beta.-D-galactose moiety (a sugar moiety recognized by lectins on oral bacteria). The compositions containing glyceroglycolipids provide enhanced inhibition of bacterial adhesive interactions and may provide a surfactancy benefit and/or antibacterial benefit.

Oral hygiene antiplaque compositions which include as an active ingredient an amino sugar containing a sugar moiety recognized by lectins on oral bacteria (e.g., .beta.-D-galactose, .beta.-D-N-acetyl galactosamine, L-rhamnose and .beta.-D-fucose) and in which nitrogen is linked to carbon number 1. The amino sugars singly or in combination with each other provide enhanced inhibition of bacterial aggregation, surfactancy, and antimicrobial activity.

Oral hygiene compositions containing amino sugars as antiplaque agents

Dentifrice compositions including specific aldobionamides having a .beta.-galactosidic linkage e.g., lactobionamides, which act as antimicrobial agents and/or inhibitors of bacterial adhesion.
