Sensor data characterizing an event associated with a movable object is received. Based on the sensor data, an objective from a plurality of predefined objectives for monitoring the movable object is selected. A series of operational states having increasing power requirement levels is transitioned through. At each operational state, whether the selected objective is achievable using a respective method associated with the respective operational state and respective power requirement level is determined. Intelligent power management for monitoring a movable object

The invention integrates hardware and software for sensing, communications, data storage and control into a protection module that is sufficiently small and inexpensive to be attached directly to individual objects, such as musical instruments, and the inventory of stores and museums. Sensors monitor environmental factors, such as temperature and humidity, and accelerometers alert owners to unwanted motion, such as theft or misuse. Sensed data is stored locally and transmitted wirelessly to nonproprietary data receivers, such as smart phones or tablets that generate alerts. In some embodiments the data is forwarded to cloud servers for storage and analysis. Bluetooth communication between the attached module and the data receiver allows large spaces, such as stores and showrooms containing many attached modules to be protected. In some embodiments accelerometers enable finger-tap-controlled recording of musical performance and tuning of the instrument relative to tonal frequencies stored in the module.

Protecting mobile objects

A log for managing data in a shadow set of storage media includes a system for maintaining a log of address information associated with at least one write command received from one of a plurality of data processing devices. The system for maintaining a log of address information includes a device for receiving a write command from a data processing device, a device which writes data associated with the write command in a section of one of the storage media, and a device which writes address information in a log indicative of the location of that section. A device is provided which then implements a management operation on data stored on one of the storage media in accordance with the address information stored in the log.

Log for selective management of specific address in a shadow storage

A method and apparatus for transferring data between two storage media, and is used in an illustrative embodiment to transfer data between two storage media in a shadow set, the storage media being accessible to one or more host processors. The method of the preferred embodiment includes the steps of: A. receiving a command from one of the host processors, the command specifying data to be transferred from a first storage medium to a second storage medium; B. transferring the data specified in the command received from the host from the first storage medium to the second storage medium in a series of subtransfers, each of the subtransfers transferring a portion of the data; and C. processing one or more I/O requests to the shadow set received from one or more host processors by, for each received I/O request: a. implementing the I/O request if the I/O request does not involve a section of the shadow set currently involved in one of the subtransfers; and b. stalling the I/O request if the I/O request involves a section of said shadow set currently involved in one of the subtransfers, and implementing the I/O request when the subtransfer has completed.

Transferring data in a digital data processing system

A secondary storage facility having a drive and a controller employing multiple error recovery techniques; the controller signals the drive to try such techniques in sequence, according to descending a priori probability of success. The controller does not know or need to know the details of the error recovery procedures.

Secondary storage facility empolying serial communications between drive

In a system including a plurality of mass storage devices at least one of which includes first and second ports, a plurality of controllers and cables coupling the ports to various ones of the controllers and in which each device can only be on-line through one port at a time, state information is sent from the on-line port of each device to a first controller to which it is coupled until a predetermined command from the controller to the on-line port is sent by the first controller. The device responds to the predetermined command by discontinuing the sending of state information from the on-line port to the first controller, and sending a state available signal from the other port to the second controller while maintaining the actual state of said device unchanged, permitting the other controller to interrogate the device as an aid in determining system topology.

Secondary storage facility employing serial communications between drive

In a data processing system including a host computer and a secondary storage system that includes a controller and a mass storage device, the device stores information regarding the physical and logical characteristics of a disk drive associated with the device. In response to a command from the controller, the device produces a signal or signals which provide information to the controller regarding the physical and logical characteristics of the disk drive. The physical and logical characteristics include the drive bit transfer rate and subunit characteristics.

A radial bus for use in a secondary storage subsystem, between a mass storage drive and controller. The bus has four unidirectional bit-serial channels, two for carrying signals from drive to controllers. One channel carries real-time drive state information to the controller; another carries real-time controller state information to the drive. The state information is a sequence of multiplexed bits sent in continuous repetition. Most status variables are represented as a single bit in a specific place in the sequence; the set of status variables defining drive state or controller state, as the case may be, is thus provided by a sequence of bits. When such a bit changes state, a potential change of status has occurred; the change is required to persist some number of repetition of the sequence before the state change is recognized, to avoid spuriously signalling a state change.

An address conversion unit for a multiprocessor system including a common memory, and in which at least one processor includes a private memory, with the private memory and common memory having separate and distinct memory spaces. The conversion unit converts addresses between private addresses that are used within the processor itself and addresses that are used to retrieve contents of locations in common memory.

A control arrangement for coordinating operations of multiple processors in a multiprocessor system in response to a command. Each command is associated with a route comprising a sequence of route vectors, each identifying an operation to be performed to execute the command, as well as the process, or station, to execute the route vector. In response to the receipt of a command, a control block is generated identifying the first route vector in the route associated with the command. Each station has a work queue containing control blocks, which the station retrieves and processes sequentially. The control block is first sent to the work queue of the station to perform the first operation. When the station gets to the control block, it performs the operation required by the route vector, modifies the control block to identify the next route vector in the sequence, and transfers the control block to the work queue of the station to perform the operation required by the next route vector in the route.
