A method of manufacturing a powdered composition or starting material used in producing a CBN compact which comprises CBN, a secondary hard phase and a binder phase includes two steps of attrition milling. First, the attrition milling of the secondary hard phase and the binder phase. Second, adding CBN particles to the fine particle mixture of the first attrition milling and then attrition milling this mixture.

Cubic boron nitride compact

A method for producing a cutting tool such a twist grill, end mill, or the like. The method provides an unbonded assembly including a cylindrical core having ends and an elongate side surface covered partially or completely by a coherent, unsintered layer including ultra-hard abrasive particles for producing an ultra-hard material. The unbonded assembly is subjected to elevated temperature and pressure conditions at which the ultra-hard abrasive is crystographically stable. The sintered product is then recovered that includes a cylindrical core and a layer of ultra-hard abrasive material bonded to the core, and the sintered product is worked to produce one or more cutting edges in the layer of ultra-hard abrasive material.

Method of making a cutting tool

A method of producing an abrasive product comprises providing a mixture of a mass of discrete carbide particles and a mass of diamond particles, the diamond particles being present in the mixture in an amount such that the diamond content of the abrasive product is 25% or less by weight, and subjecting the mixture to elevated temperature and pressure conditions at which the diamond is crystallographically stable and at which substantially no graphite is formed, in the presence of a bonding metal or alloy capable of bonding the mixture into a coherent, sintered product, to produce the abrasive product. The bonding metal or alloy is preferably a combination of a transition metal or a transition metal alloy and up to 40% by volume of the bonding metal or alloy of a second metal which is a stronger carbide former than the transition metal or the transition metal alloy, or an alloy of the second metal.

Method of producing an abrasive product containing diamond

A method of producing a plurality of discrete ultra-hard abrasive particles includes the steps of providing a plurality of granules, each comprising at least one ultra-hard abrasive particle, a precursor for the abrasive particle and a solvent/catalyst for the abrasive particle or precursor of such a solvent/catalyst, placing the granules with a separating medium between adjacent granules in the reaction zone of a high pressure/high temperature apparatus, subjecting the contents of the reaction zone to elevated temperature and pressure conditions at which the ultra-hard abrasive particle is crystallographically stable, recovering thus treated material from the reaction zone and removing the separating medium in the treated material to produce a plurality of discrete abrasive particles.

Method of producing ultra-hard abrasive particles

A method of producing an abrasive product consists of providing a mixture of a mass of discrete carbide particles and a mass of cubic boron nitride particles, the cubic boron nitride particles being present in the mixture in an amount such that the cubic boron nitride content of the abrasive product is 25% or less by weight, and subjecting the mixture to elevated temperature and pressure conditions at which the cubic boron nitride is crystallographically stable and at which substantially no hexagonal boron nitride is formed, in the presence of a bonding metal or alloy capable of bonding the mixture into a coherent, sintered product, to form the abrasive product. The bonding metal or alloy comprises a combination of a transition metal or a transition alloy and up to 40% by volume of the bonding metal or alloy of a second metal which is a stronger nitride or boride former than the transition metal or the transition metal alloy.

Method of producing an abrasive product containing cubic boron nitride

A method is provided for producing a plurality of polycrystalline ultra-hard abrasive grit. The method includes the steps of providing a mass of ultra-hard abrasive particles or a mass of a combination of a precursor for such particles and a suitable solvent/catalyst, forming the mass into a plurality of green state granules, placing the granules with a separating medium between adjacent granules in the reaction zone of a high pressure/high temperature apparatus, subjecting the contents of the reaction zone to elevated temperature and pressure conditions which the ultra-hard abrasive particle is crystallographically stable, recovering the thus sintered material from the reaction zone and removing the separating medium in the sintered material to produce a plurality of crystalline abrasive grit. The ultra-hard abrasive is generally diamond or cubic boron nitride.

Polycrystalline abrasive grit

A tool component comprising an abrasive element presenting a cutting edge or point and a thermally conductive element having a thermal conductivity greater than the thermal conductivity of the abrasive element, wherein the thermally conductive element is in thermal contact with the abrasive element so as to conduct heat generated at the cutting edge or point away from such cutting edge or point. The thermally conductive element may be bonded to a substrate. The abrasive element may be PCBN and the thermally conductive element may be either CVD diamond or PCD or else the abrasive element may be PCD and the thermally conductive element may be CVD diamond.
