Exemplary embodiments disclose a method and system for detecting a failure and resuming processing in a computing system encompassing at least two sites, a primary site and a secondary site. In a module, an exemplary embodiment generates a record of a logically consistent state and data of system components of the primary site periodically and transfers the record of a logically consistent state and data of system components of the primary site to the secondary site. In another module, an exemplary embodiment detects a failure in the primary site, halts the generation of the record of a logically consistent state and data of system components of the primary site periodically with a data freeze function, and resumes a processing of the primary site on the secondary site with secondary site components updated with a most recent logically consistent state and data of system components of the primary site.

Enhanced recovery of highly available computing systems

A method is disclosed to selectively provide information to one or more remote computing devices. The method provides an information storage and retrieval system comprising first information, a first logical partition, and a second logical partition, where the first information is disposed in the first logical partition. The method further provides a data extraction algorithm, forms second information comprising an instantaneous point-in-time copy of the first information, and forms third information from the second information using the data extraction algorithm. The method then migrates the third information from the first logical partition to the second logical partition, and provides access rights to that third information to one or more computing devices capable of communicating with the information storage and retrieval system.

Apparatus and method to selectively provide information to one or more computing devices

Provided is a method for maintaining mirror and storage system copies of volumes at multiple remote sites. A first server maintains a mirror copy relationship between a first storage system at a first site and a second storage system at a second site. The first server performs a first point-in-time copy operation from the first storage system to a first storage system copy, wherein the data for the first storage system copy is consistent as of the determined point-in-time. The first server transmits a command to a second server to create a point-in-time copy of the second storage system. The second server processes mirror data transferred from the first server as part of the mirror copy relationship to determine when to create a second point-in-time copy. The second server performs the second point-in-time copy operation.

Maintaining mirror and storage system copies of volumes at multiple remote sites

Provided are a computer program product and system for maintaining mirror and storage system copies of volumes at multiple remote sites. A first server maintains a mirror copy relationship between a first storage system at a first site and a second storage system at a second site. The first server performs a first point-in-time copy operation from the first storage system to a first storage system copy, wherein the data for the first storage system copy is consistent as of the determined point-in-time. The first server transmits a command to a second server to create a point-in-time copy of the second storage system. The second server processes mirror data transferred from the first server as part of the mirror copy relationship to determine when to create a second point-in-time copy. The second server performs the second point-in-time copy operation.

Provided are a system and article of manufacture for mirroring data. A mirror policy indicating volumes in a first storage system is processed to mirror to volumes in a second storage system and volumes in the second storage system to mirror to volumes in a third storage system. The third storage system is at a first geographical location remote with respect to a second geographical location including the first and second storage systems. A command is transmitted to cause the copying of updates to the volumes in the first storage system to corresponding volumes in the second storage system indicated in the mirror policy. Upon an occurrence of an event, the causing the suspension of the copying of updates to the volumes in the first storage system indicated in the mirroring policy to the volumes in the second storage system. During the suspension of the copying of volumes between the first and second storage systems, causing the copying of updates to the volumes in the second storage system indicated in the mirroring policy to the volumes in the third storage system indicated in the mirroring policy.

Method, system, and article of manufacture for mirroring data at storage locations

Providing extended or end-to-end data integrity through layers of a system. In one aspect, information is to be transmitted between an application end of the system and a physical storage medium that stores the information for a database of the system, the information to be transmitted via a database server in a database server layer of the system. At least a portion of data protection is provided for the information, the data protection causing the information to be protected from corruption between a system layer and the physical storage medium, where the system layer is a separate layer provided closer to the application end of the system than the database server layer.

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for continuously protecting data. A mirror module mirrors a primary record set to a base record set. A log module accumulates each record change to the primary record set in a log. A change selection module selects a record change from the log. A change application module applies the selected record change to the base record set to form a recovered record set.

A determination is made that previously written data is stored in the first storage location. Provided are a method, system and program from for managing failures in a mirrored system. A copy relationship between primary and secondary storage locations, wherein updates to the primary storage locations are copied to the secondary storage locations. A failure is detected preventing an application from writing updates to the primary storage locations. A failure message is received for the application in response to detecting the failure, wherein the failure message is not provided to the application. The copying of updates to the primary storage locations to the secondary storage locations is suspended. The failure message is provided to the application in response to suspending the copying.

Managing failures in mirrored systems

A data storage system writes data supplied from a host to data storage in accordance with write I/O of an owning application. A workload manager directs the processing of the supplied data in accordance with the write I/O of the owning application, provides service workload identification describing the write I/O, a storage subsystem control adds the service workload identification to record set information for the data, and a journal management system stores the record set information in a journal. The journaled information, for example, may be employed for performing forensic analysis of data corruption events or to perform security audits, etc.

Provided are a method, system, and program for remote copying of updates to primary and secondary storage locations subject to a copy relationship. A first copy relationship is established between first and second storage locations in a first storage system and second storage system, respectively, wherein updates to the first storage locations are copied to the second storage locations. Updates are copied from the first or second storage locations to the third storage locations, wherein the first or second bitmap is capable of being used to determine updates for the first or second storage locations to copy to the third storage locations.

Clocks are periodically synchronized at the primary control unit and the secondary control units with a time server.
