A diaphragm assembly for a fluid driven diaphragm pump includes a piston having an inflexible core. This core includes a hub with a plate extending radially from about the periphery of the hub. The piston further includes a unitary diaphragm body molded with the inflexible core in situ. The unitary diaphragm body has a plurality of connective tendons extending through the plate. A thermoplastic coating extends about the inflexible core between the core and the molded unitary diaphragm body having a thermally miscible surface with the thermoplastic coating. An inflexible backing plate extends in juxtaposition with the diaphragm.

Pump diaphragm

A reciprocating air distribution system includes a valve housing, having a cylinder therein. A valve element is slidably mounted within the cylinder. Also provided is an inlet to the cylinder, an exhaust from the cylinder and air distribution passages which are controlled by the valve element to be connected either with the intake or the exhaust. A nonmetallic gasket of thermally insulative material and thickness is between the inlet and air distribution passages on one side and the valve element and exhaust on the other. The buna elastomer has carbon black filer to make the gasket statically dissipative. The nonmetallic gasket provides channels which are part of valve control passages which are associated with a pilot valve. The valve control passages are from the inlet to both ends of the cylinder with at least one passage controlled by the pilot valve. These channels are closed by one of the components between which the gasket is located. The reciprocating air distribution system includes a restricted inlet such that the air inlet ports are of a combined area of approximately 0.057 square inches and of a ratio of exhaust port area to inlet port area of approximately 8.0 for models achieving up to 180 gallons per minutes, and the air inlet ports are of a combined area of approximately 0.083 square inches and of a ratio of exhaust port area to inlet port area of approximately 5.4 for models achieving between 180 and 275 gallons per minutes. A muffler is in communication with the exhaust. The muffler includes a cavity open to the housing of the valve and separated by an exhaust gasket. The exhaust gasket includes a locking flange extending into the cavity of the muffler to resist the pressure within the cavity.

Reciprocating air distribution system

An air driven double diaphragm pump has two opposed pumping cavities with diaphragms extending thereacross. A shaft extends between the diaphragms and through an actuator housing. The housing includes a control valve assembly having a control valve to direct pressurized air to one or the other of the dual pumping cavities and two relief valves which cooperate with the pump shaft position to release air from one end or the other of the control valve for the shifting thereof. Shuttle valve elements are positioned between the control valve and the pumping chambers. The shuttle valve elements are slidably positioned within the valve cavities to move between extreme positions under the pressures within the input and the pumping cavity. In one extreme position, the pumping cavity is in communication with an exhaust having a tapered passage. In the other, the exhaust is cut off and pressurized air is able to pass through a one-way valve in a passageway through the shuttle valve element to charge the pumping chamber.

An air driven double diaphragm pump including two opposed pump chambers with an air motor having air chambers therebetween. The pump chambers and air chambers form pumping cavities divided by diaphragms. Each pump chamber includes an inlet ball valve and outlet ball valve. An inlet manifold is positioned below the pump chambers and an outlet manifold above. Tie-rods extend both across the pump from one pump chamber to the other with nuts to place the assembly in compression. Tie-rods also extend from the outlet manifold through the pump chambers, to the inlet manifold and to feet mounted therebelow. Two plates, one to either side of the air motor extend to grooves in the inlet and outlet manifold and also extend to grooves in the pump chambers so as to close of the side of the pump structure. With the plates, an outlet manifold is provided from which air may be exhausted remotely. The ball valves include small diametrical clearance and a limitation on lift for added performance. The ball valves also include seats which are sealed with the components of the pump through the use of O-rings and surfaces polished to 10R,. Belleville washers relieve thermal stresses on the tie-rods. Integrally molded diaphragms include an annular sheet about a hub. A semi-circular corrugation about the periphery provides for attachment to the pump while a cylindrical flange mates with a boss on the respective pump chamber. A stud is molded as an insert into the diaphragm. The pullout failure rate of the stud is empirically established by appropriate sizes of circumferential ribs and hub thickness to be higher than the rupture rate for the annular sheet. Thus, failure occurs before air chamber contamination.
