An improved GFCI device prevents miswiring. Load conductors are electrically isolated from receptacle conductors. Normally closed contacts are held open by a miswire prevention mechanism, such that if power is connected to the load contacts, power cannot be delivered to the GFCI device, the receptacle conductors or the line conductors. Once power is properly connected to the line conductors, a proper wiring detection circuit activates the miswire prevention mechanism to release the normally closed contacts, thereby electrically connecting the receptacle conductors and the load conductors. After proper installation, the receptacle conductors are preferably permanently connected to the load conductors. The device is preferably shipped in the reset state.

A circuit interrupting device, such as a GFCI receptacle device, is provided that automatically resets itself when power is initially applied to the device, for example, when the device is first installed or when power is reapplied after a power outage occurs. When power is applied correctly to the line side of the device, as opposed to the load side, a voltage is generated that turns on a switching device. Turning on the switching device allows a low level of electric current to flow which, in turn, allows a higher level electric current to flow which closes the latching mechanism of the device and places the device in the reset condition.

A self test (ST) ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) provides improved end of life (EOL) detection by rejecting false EOL information. A processing device receives fault detection signals indicating when faults are detected, and input signals indicating when contacts used to interrupt power to a load are closed. The processing device rejects the fault detection signals when they fail to meet a selected condition and the contacts are closed, and declares end of life (EOL) when the selected condition is met. The fault detection signals can correspond to pulses at an output of a gated device between the processing device and a GFCI chip, and the selected condition can be a selected integer number of pulses.

A self test (ST) ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) provides a half wave rectifier for powering circuitry for determining and annunciating end of life (EOL) of the GFCI regardless of a shorted diode bridge or opening of a printed circuit board (PCB) trace. A fuse resistor is provided to open before an open PCB trace can occur. A microprocessor-controlled heat-conducting circuit is provided adjacent to a thermal fuse to controllably open the thermal fuse and remove power from face receptacle contacts and load terminals when EOL occurs.

A kitchen appliance having a heating element and a control for controlling supply of electricity to the heating element. The control comprises a temperature sensor comprising a thermistor or thermocouple; an electronic controller electrically connected to the temperature sensor; and a user actuatable input connected to the electronic controller for selecting upper and lower temperatures for cycling OFF and ON supply of electricity to the heating element. For all of the user selectable upper temperatures, the electronic controller is adapted to turn OFF supply of electricity to the heating element when an output from the temperature sensor indicates a sensed temperature which is equal to or above the selected upper temperature plus a first predetermined temperature value.
