A combination modem including at least one line connector that is configured for coupling to a transmission medium, analog modem logic that is capable of performing analog modem communications via the transmission medium, digital modem logic that is capable of performing digital modem communications via the transmission medium, a bus interface that enables communication with a computer via an expansion bus of the computer, and processing logic. In this manner a single modem expansion card supports both analog and digital modem technologies using only one slot of an expansion bus of the computer. The analog modem logic may support 56K technologies, such as K56Flex&#x2122;, V.90, etc., or any combination thereof. The digital modem logic may be according to any type of xDSL, such as ADSL, or U-ADSL, etc. The modem may operate as an analog modem, a digital modem, or as both at the same time with or without a POTS splitter. A single digital signal processor (DSP) located on the modem card may be used to support either the analog or the digital modem communications at any given time or both at the same time. The modem card may be configured as a PCI card for plugging into a PCI bus of the computer.

Combination analog and digital modem

A networking modem capable of full duplex communication over a telephone line is adapted for use as a component of a computer system. The modem comprises a digital signal processor (DSP) capable of implementing a plurality of digital modulation and demodulation techniques, including pulse position modulation (PPM), quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The DSP implements a digital phase locked loop (DPLL), including a carrier NCO and a carrier detector to synchronize local demodulation timing to an incoming carrier signal. Available processing options include spectral agility for optimizing channel capacity, symbol shaping to compensate for evolving channel conditions, and echo cancellation. The digital processing provides a flexible, adaptive, programmable, and backward compatible solution to eliminate various problems with prior art systems, including timing inaccuracies, incompatibility with standard modulation techniques, the half duplex limitation, and the susceptibility to noise that increases intersymbol interference and limits throughput.

Dual mode phone line networking modem utilizing conventional telephone wiring

A modem which is separated into two circuit boards. One board contains the modem engine, while the second board contains the codec and the DAA components. The two boards are connected using only properly isolated digital signals so that the modem engine board does not require certification, only the codec/DAA board requiring certification. The codec/DAA board is contained in a housing to provide proper high voltage protection.

A computer's representation and handling of dial-up and network applications are standardized. A LAN connection is established on a session basis only when required, enabling a user or system administrator to have the same control over the LAN connection as is typically exercised over a WAN connection. Examples of WAN connection features that are available to the LAN connection are the maintenance of billing information, access control, authentication and verification. In addition, an application can be represented by several different icons configured to utilize different procedures and communication devices.

Extending dial up networking paradigm to cover network connections

A combination x digital subscriber line (xDSL) and analog modem including a computer bus interface, codecs, an analog front end (AFE) for xDSL communications coupled to a plain old telephone service (POTS) line and a direct access arrangement (DAA) for analog communications also coupled to the POTS line. The modem is designed on a peripheral component interconnect (PCI) card. Generally, &plusmn;12, 5 and 3.3 volts are available for PCI components. Traditionally, the AFEs for non-PCI modems were designed to operate on &plusmn;12 volts for differential POTS line driving. For differential POTS line driving, the AFE typically requires a regulated voltage. However, &plusmn;12 volts supplied to PCI cards are typically not as well regulated as the 5 and 3.3 volts, and therefore the &plusmn;12 volts is generally unsuitable for PCI modem AFE design. Furthermore, in computers that operate in different power management modes, &plusmn;12 volts may not be available to the PCI card while 5 and/or 3.3 volts may be available to the PCI card in certain power management modes. In one embodiment, the AFE operates on 5 volts. Power for the modem is made available from other parts of the computer supply in these power management modes.

An audio circuit for a computer includes a bidirectional modem connection, a microphone input, first and second audio output channels, and an audio synthesizing circuit arranged to produce first and second synthesized audio channels. In a first mode of operation the first synthesized audio channel is applied to the first audio output channel and the second synthesized audio channel is applied to the second audio output channel. In a second mode of operation the first and second synthesized audio channels are combined into a monotonic signal and applied to the second audio output channel, and audio signals from the bidirectional modem connection are applied to the first audio output channel.

A reduced number of relays are used in a voice/data/fax modem system. This reduced relay design eliminates at least one relay required in prior art systems thereby reducing the amount of geography used in producing the resultant device. This saves space, reduces costs, and provides a more reliable device.
