A novel process for the preparation of tricyclo[6.2.2.0.sup.3,8 ]dodecane derivatives is presented. This novel process is applied to the synthesis of the odorant 4-acetyl-1,7,7-trimethyltricyclo[6.2.2.0.sup.3,8 ]-3-dodecene, also known as 4-aceto-6,8a-ethano-1,1,6-trimethyl-1,2,3,5,6,7,8,8a-octahydronaphthalene.

2,4-Dimethyl-2-phenyl-4-pentenal possesses a strong rose geranium type odor which is especially valuable in perfumery. Compounds of closely related structure do not possess this quality.

An unsaturated cyclic acetal, 4,7-dihydro-2-(3-pentyl)-1,3-dioxepin, prepared by the condensation of 2-butene-1,4-diol with 2-ethyl-1-butanal is useful as a flavor agent for foods and an odorant for perfumes.

An unsaturated ketal, 4,7-dihydro-2-isopentyl-2-methyl-1,3-dioxepin prepared by the condensation of 2-butene-1,4-diol with 5-methyl-2-hexanone is useful as an odorant for perfume.
