A method and apparatus for upper limb rehabilitation training of coordinated arm/forearm, forearm/forearm and grasping movements of a motor impaired patient comprises a nonrobotic, passive support, an arm/forearm sensor, a gripping device, a grip sensor capable of measuring an impaired grasping force of a grasping of the patient, a computer to process measurements of coordinated and simultaneous impaired arm/forearm, forearm/forearm and grasping movements to control a graphical representation of the arm/forearm and grasping movements in interaction with a virtual environment, and to provide a visual feedback signal to the patient of simulated normal activities of daily living performed with enhanced motor ability relative to the actual impaired motor ability. A visual feedback signal of the simulated activities of daily living is provided to motivate the patient to perform the upper limb rehabilitation movement training despite limited motor ability.

Method and apparatus for automating arm and grasping movement training for rehabilitation of patients with motor impairment

In a high-speed fabrication process for producing highly uniform metallic microspheres, a molten metal is passed through a small orifice, producing a stream of molten metal therefrom. A series of molten metal droplets forms from the break up of the capillary stream. To achieve high uniformity of the spheres and avoid defects, the droplets are cooled before being captured. Separating the droplets, by causing them to travel in different paths than their adjacent droplets, helps to facilitate the cooling of the droplets. The droplets can be separated by electrostatically charging them as they break off from the capillary stream. The droplets are then passed through an electric field, which can be produced by a pair of deflection plates. The droplets are dispersed by varying the electric field&#x2014;e.g., by rotating the plates or by varying the voltage applied thereto&#x2014;or by varying the electrostatic charge of the droplets. Advantageously, the droplets can be actively cooled in flight by passing them through a cryogenic gas chamber.

Ultra-small satellite droplets of molten metal, generated from capillary stream break-up, are selectively directed to predetermined locations on a substrate. The satellite droplets are produced at a high rate and are highly uniform because of the nature of capillary stream break-up. Applied harmonic disturbances are used to control and generate the satellite and parent droplets. The satellite droplets are electrostatically charged on a droplet-by-droplet basis and are then deflected by, e.g., an electric field to predetermined locations on a substrate. The substrate is moveable, attached to an x-y table, for facilitating the placement of satellite droplets on the substrate. The satellite droplets can be placed in individual locations on the substrate (e.g., for forming a ball grid array) or can be overlapped to form conductive traces. Because the satellite droplets have small diameters, these traces may have correspondingly small widths or pitches.

High-speed direct writing with metallic microspheres

In a high-speed fabrication process for producing highly uniform ultra-small metallic micro-spheres, a molten metal is passed through a small orifice, producing a stream of molten metal therefrom. A series of molten metal droplets forms from the break up of the capillary stream. Applied harmonic disturbances are used to control and generate satellite and parent droplets. Significantly, the satellite droplets formed are smaller than the orifice, allowing for the production of smaller metal balls with larger orifices. The satellite droplets are separated from the parent droplets by electrostatic charging and deflection or by aerodynamic or acoustic sorting. Preferably, the satellite droplets are cooled before being collected to avoid defects and achieve high uniformity of the resulting metal balls.

High-speed fabrication of highly uniform ultra-small metallic microspheres

An apparatus for depositing a selected pattern of solder onto a substrate comprising a substrate support, a solder ejector, and an orifice defining structure. The substrate support has structure for bearing a substrate on which one or more electronic components are to be mounted. The solder ejector has a housing that defines a cavity for containing molten solder. The orifice defining structure includes a flat disk having an orifice defined therethrough for producing a stream of molten solder and a disk support structure that supports the disk around the orifice and is replaceably coupled to the cavity-defining structure. Also disclosed is an apparatus that deposits a selected pattern of solder onto a substrate and includes a substrate support, a solder ejector that directs solder droplets to desired positions on the support, and an ejector aligner that adjusts the orientation of the solder ejector in two angular dimensions to enable adjustment of the trajectory of the stream of molten solder droplets.

Jet soldering system and method

Continuous jetting of liquid metal droplets for deposit on a substrate includes an ejector, a deflection device, a print chute, and a collection reservoir. Liquid metal from a cartridge in the ejector provides a continuous molten material stream through an orifice-defining structure while a vibration device creates a standing wave in the stream to break the molten material stream into individual droplets which receive charge from a charging device. The deflection device enables the positioning of the charged droplets to be controlled for placement on a substrate. Control systems assist in the calibration and control of the continuous stream to ensure that selected droplets are placed at desired locations on the substrate.

High speed jet soldering system

An apparatus for filling filtered solder into replaceable solder cartridges for use in a system for depositing a selected pattern of solder onto a substrate on which electronic components are to be mounted. The apparatus includes a cartridge support, an environmentally-controlled chamber, a solder receptacle, a heater, a molten solder flow conduit, and a separator.
