Photodefineable cyclobutarene compositions are disclosed. These polymer compositions are useful in composites, laminates, membranes, films, adhesives, coatings, and electronic applications such as multichip modules and printed circuit boards. An example of such photodefineable cyclobutarene compositions is a mixture of a photosensitive agent such as 2,6-bis(4-azidobenzylidene)-4-methylcyclohexanone and a cyclobutarene such as oligomeric divinyltetramethyldisiloxane bisbenzocyclobutane.

Described herein is a composition comprising at least 10 percent by weight of water and, based on the weight of components (a), (b), and (c); (a) 0 to about 95 percent by weight of a water-compatible polymer having at least two pendant carboxylate groups; (b) 1 to about 60 percent by weight of a polymeric polycarboxylate polymer different from (a) having (1) at least two pendant carboxylate groups and (2) at least one internal amide, thioamide, urea, thiourea, biuret, dithiobiuret, or urethane group; and (c) 2 to about 70 percent by weight of a polyfunctional crosslinking agent having an ionic or potentially ionic moiety counter ion capable of reacting with the carboxylate groups of (a) and (b). The composition of the invention provides a water-based coating which, when deposited on a surface to be coated and allowed to dry and form a crosslinked polymer, has a high degree of wear resistance, hardness, and impact resistance.

This invention relates to a solid particulate polymer comprising 1) a backbone containing (a) a plurality of moieties selected from the group consisting of alkylene, arylene, aralkylene, alkylarylene, cycloalkylene, alkyleneoxy, and polyalkyleneoxy; (b) a plurality of moieties selected from the group consisting of internal urea, thiourea, biuret and dithiobiuret; and 2) end groups selected from the group consisting of internal urea, thiourea, biuret and dithiobiuret. The particulate polymer dispersions can be used for preparing reinforced polymer matrices, especially where the matrix comprises urethane and/or urea linkages. Novel polyahls having backbones containing urea, urethane and polyamine moieties and hydroxyl and/or amine terminal groups are prepared by contacting a polyamine such as an aminated polyether polyol or hexamethylene diamine with a cyclic alkylene carbonate such as propylene carbonate under conditions sufficient to form the polyahl and a monoalkylene glycol. The monoalkylene glycol is removed from the reaction mixture in order to drive the reaction to completion. Such polyahls are useful in the preparation of isocyanate-functional prepolymers and polyurea/polyurethanes. The latter are suitably employed as flexible and rigid foams, coatings, RIM elastomers and other applications where conventional polyurethanes are employed.
