An aerosol-generating element for generating an aerosol in a shisha device, the aerosol-generating element includes a receptacle for receiving an aerosol-forming substrate and a photonic device configured to generate a beam of IR radiation. The aerosol-generating element is arranged to heat the aerosol-forming substrate by directing the beam of IR radiation onto the aerosol-forming substrate. The photonic device includes an IR laser diode. The range of wavelengths of the beam of IR radiation is from 1300 nanometers to 2000 nanometers.

An aerosol-generating article including a rod of aerosol-generating substrate is provided, the rod including: an aerosol-generating film comprising at least 25 percent by weight of a polyhydric alcohol and at least 10 percent by weight of a cellulose based film-forming agent, the aerosol-generating film being configured such that an exposed surface area of the aerosol-generating film within the aerosol-generating substrate is at least 5 square millimeters per mg of the aerosol-generating film, and the aerosol-generating film being substantially tobacco-free. A rod for use as an aerosol-generating substrate in an aerosol-generating article, and an aerosol-generating system including an aerosol aerosol-generating article and an electrically operated aerosol-generating device are also provided.

An aerosol-generator for an aerosol-generating device is provided, the aerosol-generator including: a surface acoustic wave atomiser including a substrate including an active surface defining at least one atomisation region, and at least one transducer positioned on the active surface to generate surface acoustic waves on the active surface; and a supply element arranged to supply a liquid aerosol-forming substrate to the atomisation region, the supply element including a channel extending through the substrate between an inlet to receive a supply of the liquid aerosol-forming substrate and an outlet positioned within the atomisation region of the active surface, in which the channel has at least one of a cross-sectional area that varies in a direction from the inlet to the outlet and a portion that extends in a non-perpendicular direction with respect to the active surface. An aerosol-generating device including the aerosol-generator is also provided.

An aerosol-generating device is provided, including: a first storage portion; a first liquid aerosol-forming substrate contained within the first storage portion; an electrospray device to generate a first aerosol from the first liquid aerosol-forming substrate, the electrospray device including a nozzle to receive the first liquid aerosol-forming substrate from the first storage portion, and a voltage circuit including a circuit ground, the voltage circuit to apply a voltage difference between the first liquid aerosol-forming substrate and the circuit ground; a second storage portion; a second liquid aerosol-forming substrate contained within the second storage portion; a heater to heat second liquid aerosol-forming substrate from the second storage portion; and a mixing chamber in fluid communication with the nozzle and the heater, the heater being downstream of the nozzle. A method of generating a mixed aerosol by the aerosol-generating device is also provided.
