A tire includes a carcass ply, a tread disposed radially outward of a crown region of the carcass ply, and a belt structure having an overall axial width substantially equal to a tread width interposed between the tread and the crown region in circumferential surrounding relation to the carcass ply. The belt structure includes a first belt layer and a second belt layer radially adjacent the first belt layer. The first belt layer includes a first reinforced composite with first reinforcement cords embedded in a first rubber matrix. The first reinforcement cords have a construction of 1100/4 dtex with a twist between 150 TPM and 250 TPM and a dipping tension between 100 mN/tex and 200 mN/tex.

Belt structure for a tire

A tire control system for a vehicle is provided includes an RFID tag mounted to the tire and having a unique tire serial number stored within tag memory accessible to an external reader; a pass-through portal operatively entered and exited by the vehicle; one or more tire-directed antenna positioned within the portal for operatively receiving one or more one data transmissions of the unique tire serial number from the tire-based RFID tag; and one or more tire-directed RFID reader coupled to the tire-directed antennas for operably reading and storing within a tire-based database the unique tire serial number data. A vehicle-based RFID tag is mounted to the vehicle having a unique vehicle serial number stored within tag memory and transmitted to an external reader as the vehicle moves through the portal. A data processing computer is coupled to receive the portal-read unique tire serial number and vehicle serial number and conducts of the portal-read unique tire serial number data and the unique vehicle serial number data against prestored reference tire serial number data and prestored reference vehicle serial number data, respectively.

RFID enabled tire control system and method

A read station and method for a vehicle includes a support pad for admitting and exiting a vehicle onto an upper pad surface; two or more data-receiving systems, one or both of such systems receiving a data transmission from a vehicle situated on the read station pad surface. The data-receiving systems include an identification-data transmission system and a monitored parameter-data transmission system. One or more of the read station data-receiving systems may be configured to effect data transmission from the vehicle as the vehicle moves across the support pad. The information-data transmission system couples a vehicle wheel unit based RFID tag with an electric field established by one or more system antennae disposed on the support pad. The monitored parameter-data communication system includes one or more wheel-unit mounted monitoring device(s) transmitting data to one or more receivers disposed within the read station and an initiator sub-system that transmits a signal from pad based antenna(s) to initiate a data transmission sequence.

Integrated read station for a wheel-mounted vehicle

Picking apparatus for handling an electronic device having an elongate dipole antenna includes: a support body having an open slot defined by guide fingers; and an antenna positioning mechanism such as a magnet positioned to move the antenna into the slot and holding the antenna within the slot in an elongate condition. The magnet may be switched to an off condition to release the antenna from the slot or mechanically overcome. An apparatus push rod actuator may be deployed to move the antenna from the slot and deposit the antenna on a receiving component surface external of the slot.

Picking apparatus for an electronic device

A method for affixing an electronic device having an elongate dipole antenna to a substrate surface includes: positioning picking apparatus adjacent to the electronic device, the picking apparatus having at least one antenna positioning means such as a magnet positioned adjacent the electronic device; activating the antenna positioning means; moving the opposite antenna ends into a captured relationship with the picking apparatus by means of the antenna positioning means; moving the picking apparatus to a position adjacent the substrate surface; engaging the substrate surface with the picking apparatus; and depositing the electronic device to the substrate surface.

Method of assembling an electronic device into a tire

A transponder carrier for embedded incorporation into a rubber article includes a bonding layer; a base layer affixed to the bonding layer, the base layer having a support surface for supporting a transponder device; and a reinforcement cap affixed to the base layer supporting surface at least partially covering the transponder device. The cap may be composed of textile cord reinforced rubber, the cap textile cords arranged in a substantially square woven configuration. A ratio of the cap to transponder device areas is within a range of 2:1 to 8:1 and the transponder device may further be coated with an adhesive to bond the transponder device to the cap and to the base layer. An antenna in a dipole antenna configuration is coupled to the transponder device in one construction.

Transponder carrier for a tire

A tread depth measurement system for measuring a depth of a tread provided to a tire on a vehicle. The system includes an energy source for emitting a wireless signal to be transmitted to the tire; a sensor for detecting a return wireless signal emitted from the tire to be transmitted in response to the wireless signal from the energy source; and a housing over which the tire is to roll while attached to the vehicle, said housing separating the sensor from the tire while the tread depth is being measured. A control unit is operatively coupled to the sensor for determining the depth of the tread as a function of at least the return wireless signal detected by the sensor.

Tread depth sensing device and method for measuring same

Apparatus and method for post-cure application of electronics to a tire includes the steps: forming an antenna wire into a predetermined shape having first and second free ends; creating a transponder splice region between the first and second free antenna ends, incorporating transponder splice region identification indicia; curing the antenna wire into a tire during a tire manufacturing procedure; locating the transponder splice region by means of the transponder splice region identification indicia; and splicing the antenna wire ends to a sensor in a post-cure procedure. The transponder splice region identification indicia may include sandwiching a junction box or the overlapped ends of the antenna wire or wires between layers of select material that will not bond to the tire inner liner or antenna cover compounds and incorporating an air pocket in the sandwiched region. Alternatively, or in conjunction with the air pocket, a unique cover layer differentiated by color or other discernible means may be utilized to seal and cover the transponder splice region.

Method and assembly of sensor ready tires

A hybrid cord is presented for use in the reinforcement of elastomers. The hybrid cord is characterized by having a core steel filament, a first layer of one or more nonmetallic filaments which are wrapped about the steel filament in the core, and a second layer of from 4 to 12 steel filaments which are wrapped about the first layer.
