An improved process for manufacturing a dual cure anaerobic/ultraviolet adhesive. The process includes the first step of mixing a polymerizable (meth)acrylate ester monomer, such as methacrylic acid, a chelating agent and an accelerator. The second step is heating the mixture sufficiently to provide anaerobic curing properties. Next, one or more photoinitiators are added to the composition. No chelating agent is added during the addition of the photoinitiators.

Method for the preparation of a stable anaerobic/UV/visible light curable adhesive

A two part structural acrylic adhesive contains as a first part a mixture of acrylate or methacrylate monomers or oligomers, maleic acid, a hydroperoxide, and a source of ferric ions, and as a second activator part a substituted dihydropyridine. The adhesive is fast-curing and stable.

This is a thermally conductive adhesive having excellent die shear strength, in film form, and having a weight average molecular weight of about 100,000 to 150,000, prepared from a mixture of a dietherdianhydride, a meta-substituted benzenediamine, a polysiloanediamine, and a thermally conductive filler, that is suitable as a die attach adhesive: it bonds rapidly without the need for curing or baking off-line; does not produce excess stress on the die; requires no refrigeration; provides uniform bond line thickness between the die and paddle; can be used at temperatures that do not oxidize copper lead frames or produce excessive thermal stress; can be reworked; and can exert adequate adhesion during the processes of wire bonding and molding.

Thermoplastic film die attach adhesives

A composition comprising a multifunctional glycidyl ether having at least three epoxy groups per molecule with a hardening amount of a mixture of a rigid aromatic diamine and an aromatic diaminopolysiloxane can be thermally cured to a compatible composition. Glycidylamines cannot be used in this composition. Optionally, a diglycidyl ether can be included. The cured compositions have higher glass transition temperatures than previously observed with epoxy/silicone systems. They also have improved resistance to atomic oxygen over that shown by epoxy formulations lacking a polysiloxane species therein.

The present invention provides an improvement in a process for preparing carbon fiber reinforced polyimide compositions from a mixture of monomers by the application of heat in two stages. The improvement comprises incorporating a cyclic peroxyketal catalyst, such as 3,6,6,9,9,-pentamethyl-3-(ethylacetate)-1,2,4,5-tetraoxycyclononane, into the monomer mixture prior to reaction.

Carbon fibers are provided which bear an improved finish coating upon the surface which is capable of withstanding the high temperatures (e.g., above 500.degree. F.) commonly encountered during the formation of composite structures employing a polyimide matrix. The sized carbon fibers prior to the curing to form a rigid polyimide coating are flexible, may be readily handled without significant damage, and are amenable to good impregnation with the matrix resin thereby facilitating the formation of quality composite structures. The finish comprises a mixture of selected precursors for the formation of a rigid polyimide (as described). More specifically, the size composition is formed from at least one aromatic diamine, at least one aromatic dianhydride, and at least one aromatic tetracarboxylic acid diester. A film-forming polyamic acid oligomer readily forms and is present as an intermediate reaction product within the finish coating and the aromatic tetracarboxylic acid diester has been found to beneficially serve primarily as a flexibility preserving diluent during the early stages of the polyimide-forming reaction which takes place within the finish coating. The finish is fully compatible with a polyimide matrix.

The present invention is directed to carbon fibers which are coated on the surface with a sizing agent of either a polyisocyanate, such as polymethylene polyphenyl polyisocyanate, or a sorbitol polyglycidyl ether having a specifically defined total chlorine content and epoxide equivalent weight. The coated carbon fibers are employed to prepare carbon fiber composites wherein the matrix resin is a thermoplastic polyester such as poly(1,4-butylene terephthalate). The matrix resin of the composite exhibits improved bonding with the coated carbon fibers thereby imparting improved interlaminar shear strength to the composite.

The polycarbodiimide contains at least three carbodiimide units per polycarbodiimide molecule and is derived from one or more aromatic diisocyanates which are unsubstituted or are substituted with up to one methyl substituent on each aromatic ring.

The present invention is directed to (1) an epoxy compound identified as 3,3'-tetraglycidylsulfonyldianiline (referred to herein as 3,3'-TGDDS); (2) a thermosetting composition comprising 3,3'-TGDDS and a curing agent; (3) a thermosetting composition having improved resistance to moisture and to a reduction in the glass transition temperature at elevated temperatures when cured comprising (a) the above epoxy compound, i.e., 3,3'-TGDDS, (b) a polybutadiene rubber or mixture thereof, (c) an epoxy curing agent such as 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfone, (d) a free radical initiator and esterification catalyst for the polybutadiene rubber; and (4) a carbon fiber/rubber modified epoxy composite prepared from the thermosetting composition of (3). The 3,3'-TGDDS when melted and admixed with the polybutadiene rubber in a solventless system forms a homogeneous mixture which is stable for extended periods.

A process is disclosed for producing a modified polyethylene iso-terephthalate copolymer which may be processed into plastic containers using conventional extrusion blow molding equipment. The copolymer is modified by the incorporation into a polyethylene iso/terephthalate prepolymer of a chain branching agent and a chain terminating agent. The prepolymer is subsequently solid-state polymerized to form a polyethylene iso/terephthalate copolymer having high zero shear rate melt viscosity and shear sensitivity. This modified copolymer is transparent when extrusion blow molded into a shaped article. The modified copolymer may be extrusion blow molded in intermittent and continuous processes.
