A training kit for training individuals to recognize one or more hazardous materials including a housing having dividing means within the housing dividing the housing into a plurality of compartments; each compartment having a set of container receiving portions; and container means in each of the container receiving portions of each of the compartments; indicia means associated with each compartment having identifying information, each container means in a compartment containing a simulant having one or more characteristics, the characteristics being perceptible to the individual; wherein the simulant mimics one or more characteristics of the hazardous material and the simulant is less hazardous than the hazardous material.

A process for making symmetrical alkanediols and the bis-ethers thereof by electrochemically coupling the haloalkylethers that are the equivalent of one-half of the symmetrical bis-ether. A symmetrical alkanediol may be obtained from the symmetrical bis-ether. The method significantly increases the yield of alkanediols as for example 1,4-butanediol from electrochemical processes.

Disclosed is a method for making an .alpha.-, .omega.-dihydroxy-terminated alkane, preferably butane-1,4-diol, by cathodically coupling a polymethylene halohydrin, preferably ethylene bromo-, or iodohydrin, in an aqueous elctrolytic bath maintained at a pH of between about 8 and 10.

Disclosed are the usage, preparation, and evaluation of marine antifouling quaternary halide salts containing a cation portion which includes a trialkyltin ether moiety linked to a carbon atom at least two carbon atoms removed from the quaternized nitrogen atom. Taught as providing exceptional marine fouling inhibition are the quaternary salts of benzyl bromide and tertiary amines containing a tributylstannyl ether moiety at least two carbon atoms removed from the amino nitrogen atom with illustrated specific examples including the quaternary salts of benzyl bromide and 2-dimethylamino-2-methyl-1-propyl tributylstannyl ether, benzyl bromide and 1-dimethylamino-2-propyl tributylstannyl ether, benzyl bromide and 2-[N-pyrrolidinyl]ethyl tributylstannyl ether, and benzyl bromide and 2-diisopropylaminoethyl tributylstannyl ether. For antifouling purposes the quaternary salt is blended or dissolved in a resinous polymer component of a marine paint composition applied to an article's surface subsequently to be immersed in ocean water.

A process for photochemical collection, storage, and retrieval of solar energy, including solar energy in the visible and near-infrared light spectrum, comprising: exposing to solar radiation of a trans-isomer of particular geometrically isomerizable compounds, while dissolved in a predominantly (greater than 50 percent by volume) aqueous liquid medium, to isomerize the trans-isomer to a thermodynamically less stable, but kinetically stable, cis-isomer of higher energy content, heating the produced cis-isomer to an activation temperature triggering exothermal conversion (or return) of the cis-isomer to the trans-isomer with release of thermal energy; and continuing exothermal conversion of cis-isomer to trans-isomer through use of a portion of the exothermically released thermal energy and transferring of another portion of the released thermal energy from the region of exothermal conversion for availability of this other portion for useful thermal energy applications; with the therein employed geometrical isomerizable compound being possessed of defined properties including the properties of both the trans-isomer and cis-isomer having light absorbance maxima lying between the wavelengths of 350 and 800 nm with the absorbance maxima of the cis-isomer occuring at a shorter wavelength than the absorbance maxima of the trans-isomer, and being selected from compounds having these defined properties and certain structural formulae.
