Polymer blends having improved impact resistance and structural integrity comprise at least one aromatic polymer such as polyphenylene oxide, optionally in combination with a styrene homopolymer; at least one elastomer containing highly polar ionic (e.g., sulfonate or carboxylate) substituents, such as a sulfonated EPDM rubber or a zwitterionic polysiloxane sulfonate; and at least one substituted aromatic polymer in which the substituents are highly polar ionic substituents, such as a sulfonated polyphenylene oxide or styrene-sodium acrylate copolymer. The compositions preferably also contain at least one plasticizer.

Sulfonate-terminated polyimides and polyamic acids are prepared by the reaction of a dianhydride such as bisphenol A dianhydride, a diamine such as m-phenylenediamine or bis(4-aminophenyl)methane, and an amino sulfonic acid such as p- or m-aminobenzenesulfonic acid or 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid. The products may be used as compatibilizing agents for blends of aromatic polymers with ionomeric elastomers.

Hydrosilylation method, catalyst and method for making

Siloxane polymers containing zwitterions on tertiary silicone atoms and their aminoalkyl siloxane polymer intermediates are provided. Methods of their production are also provided. The aminoalkyl siloxane polymer intermediates and the zwitterionic siloxane polymers are obtained by co-polymerizing trifunctional aminoalkyl silanes or zwitterionic silanes, respectively, with hydroxy-terminated siloxane oligomers in the presence of an acid catalyst. The aminoalkyl siloxane polymer intermediates are converted to zwitterionic siloxane polymer by reaction with an organosultone or an organolactone. Trifunctional aminoalkyl silanes are readily available and utilizing these silanes provides an economical route to obtaining zwitterionic siloxane polymers.

Zwitterionic siloxane polymers containing tertiary silicone atoms with zwitterions and their aminoalkyl siloxane polymer intermediates production are provided. Methods of their production are also provided. A method is provided for producing aminoalkyl-siloxane polymers of a high molecular weight by hydrolyzing a difunctional aminoalkyl-silane prior to incorporation into the siloxane polymer. A method is provided wherein ionically cross-linked zwitterionic siloxane polymers are solubilized by the addition of a weak base to a combination of the zwitterionic siloxane polymers and an organic solvent. Where a weak base having a high vapor pressure is utilized, the zwitterionic siloxane polymers can be recured by evaporation of the organic solvent and base.

Cyclic methyl polysiloxanes can be prepared by hydrolysis of dimethyldichlorosilane and aqueous hydrochloric acid in the presence of a normal C.sub.6-16 alkyl sulfonic acid to give good yields of cyclic polysiloxanes and minimal amounts of linear silanols.

Methods for preparing cyclopolysiloxanes

Decamethyl cyclopentasiloxane can be prepared in good yields by treatment of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane with aqueous hydrochloric acid and a normal C.sub.6-16 alkyl sulfonic acid.
