A set of fluoroalkylphosphorus agents for extinguishment of fires, suppression of explosions, and inertion against fires and explosions is disclosed. Specifically disclosed are agents based on fluoroalkyl esters of phosphorus-containing acids.

Fluoroalkylphosphorus compounds as fire and explosion protection agents

A set of tropodegradable chemical additives to decrease the flammability of normally flammable refrigerants, foam blowing agents, cleaning solvents, aerosol propellants, and sterilants is disclosed. The additives are characterized by high efficiency and short atmospheric lifetimes. The latter property is essential and results in a low ozone depletion potential (ODP) and a low global warming potential (GWP). The additives are bromine-containing alkenes, bromine-containing alcohols, bromine-containing ethers with at least one hydrogen atom (preferably adjacent to the oxygen atom), bromine-containing amines with at least one hydrogen atom (preferably adjacent to the nitrogen atom), bromine-containing carbonyl compounds, bromine-containing aromatics, and/or bromine-containing non-fluorinated alkanes.

A set of tropodegradable bromine-containing hydrocarbon foam-blowing agents to (1) decrease the flammability of closed-cell foams and (2) to decrease flammability safety problems that may occur during foam production is disclosed. The agents are characterized by high flammability reduction efficiency and short atmospheric lifetimes. The latter property is essential and results in a low ozone depletion potential (ODP) and a low global warming potential (GWP). The agents are bromine-containing alkenes, bromine-containing ethers, bromine-containing amines, bromine-containing carbonyl compounds, bromine-containing aromatics, bromine-containing alcohols, and/or bromine-containing non-fluorinated alkanes.

Tropodegradable bromine-containing halocarbons as foam blowing agents

A set of blends for extinguishment of fires, suppression of explosions, and inertion against fires and explosions is disclosed. The blends are comprised of a bromine-containing component and a fluorine-containing component. The bromine-containing component is comprised of one or more hydrobromoalkanes, hydrobromoalkenes, and/or hydrobromoarenes. The fluorine-containing component is comprised of one or more fluorine-containing halocarbons, which may also contain chlorine. Specifically provided as fluorine-containing halocarbons are saturated and unsaturated hydrochlorofluorocarbons, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, perfluoroethers, hydrofluoroethers, and/or hydrofluoropolyethers. This provides a blend that mimics the fire and explosion protection action of halons and hydrobromofluorocarbons without the environmental impact associated with these compounds, which contain bromine and fluorine in the same molecule.

The agents are halocarbons or mixtures comprised of halocarbons that have at least one of the following features: carbon-to-carbon double bonds and/or carbon-to-iodine bonds. Specifically disclosed are the two families of agents: (I) bromine-containing alkenes and (2) iodocarbons.

Fire extinguishing agents for streaming applications

An arrangement is provided for extinguishing burning metal or metal-involved fires by combining an extinguishant with the burning metal to form a resultant material. The resultant material may include an alloy and oxides of the burning material and the extinguishant and in any event forms a coating which is an adherent oxygen barrier. In one form of the invention, the extinguishant comprises mainly elemental copper in commercially available powder form. The extinguishant mixture may also include other material added to improve the deliverability, material flow, electrical resistance, moisture resistance or other characteristics.
