A CVA system includes a sensor system including a pendulous element that rotates about a first axis via first flexures in response to an input acceleration provided along a second axis that is orthogonal with respect to the first axis. A torque-summing gimbal is coupled to the pendulous element via the first flexures and coupled to a housing via second flexures. The system further includes an accelerometer controller that monitors a pickoff signal of the rotation of the pendulous element from a first electrode coupled to the pendulous element and to provide a forcer signal to at least one second electrode coupled to the torque-summing gimbal to force the torque-summing gimbal to rotate about the second axis via the second flexures based on the pickoff signal to provide Coriolis force-rebalance of the pendulous element. The accelerometer controller can determine the input acceleration based on the rotation of the torque-summing gimbal.

Coriolis vibratory accelerometer system

One embodiment includes a method for dynamic self-calibration of an accelerometer system. The method includes forcing a proof-mass associated with a sensor of the accelerometer system in a first direction to a first predetermined position and obtaining a first measurement associated with the sensor in the first predetermined position via at least one force/detection element of the sensor. The method also includes forcing the proof-mass to a second predetermined position and obtaining a second measurement associated with the sensor in the second predetermined position via the at least one force/detection element of the sensor. The method further includes calibrating the accelerometer system based on the first and second measurements.

Dynamic self-calibration of an accelerometer system

A vibrating-mass gyroscope system includes a substantially planar vibrating-mass including opposite first and second surfaces and electrodes that extend longitudinally in a periodic pattern across the first and/or second surfaces. The electrodes include sets of drive and sense electrodes that are capacitively coupled to respective matching sets of drive and sense electrodes associated with a housing and which are separated from and facing the respective first and second surfaces. A gyroscope controller generates a drive signal provided to one of the array of drive electrodes and the substantially matching array of drive electrodes to provide for in-plane periodic oscillatory motion of the vibrating-mass, and generates a force-rebalance signal that is provided to one of the array of sense electrodes and the substantially matching array of sense electrodes to calculate rotation of the vibrating-mass gyroscope system about an input axis.

Vibrating-mass gyroscope systems and method

One embodiment of the invention includes a vibrating-mass gyroscope system. A sensor system includes a substantially planar vibrating-mass including opposite first and second surfaces and electrodes that extend longitudinally in a periodic pattern across the first and/or second surfaces. The electrodes include sets of drive and sense electrodes that are capacitively coupled to respective matching sets of drive and sense electrodes associated with a housing and which are separated from and facing the respective first and second surfaces. A gyroscope controller generates a drive signal provided to one of the array of drive electrodes and the substantially matching array of drive electrodes to provide for in-plane periodic oscillatory motion of the vibrating-mass, and generates a force-rebalance signal that is provided to one of the array of sense electrodes and the substantially matching array of sense electrodes to calculate rotation of the vibrating-mass gyroscope system about an input axis.

One embodiment of the invention includes a CVG system. A plurality of electrodes electrostatically force a resonator into a periodic motion based on a drive axis forcer signal applied to a first set of the plurality of electrodes and a sense axis force-rebalance signal applied to a second set of the plurality of electrodes, and provides a sense axis pickoff signal and a drive axis pickoff signal. A gyroscope controller generates the drive axis forcer signal based on the drive axis pickoff signal and calculates an angular rate of rotation about an input axis based on the sense axis force-rebalance signal. The gyroscope controller modulates a predetermined disturbance signal component onto the sense axis force-rebalance signal and to control a modulation phase of the sense axis force-rebalance signal based on detection of the predetermined disturbance signal component in the sense axis force-rebalance signal to substantially mitigate bias and scale-factor error.

One embodiment of the invention includes an inertial system. The system includes at least one inertial sensor configured to measure an inertial parameter associated with each of at least one axis. The system also includes a calibration system configured to sequentially measure an inertial calibration parameter at each of a plurality input axes. The system further includes an inertial processor configured to calculate motion of the inertial system based on the inertial parameter associated with each of the respective at least one axis and the sequential measurements of the inertial calibration parameter at each of the plurality of input axes.

Continuous calibration of an inertial system

A system is provided for the continuous reduction, in real time, of bias in a force rebalanced accelerometers having a proof mass coupled to an accelerometer housing by a flexure suspension. The system comprises a closed loop, force rebalance servo that provides control voltage to the proof mass to null an electrical pickoff signal that indicates the motion of the proof mass with respect to the accelerometer housing, wherein a time varying disturbance signal is injected into the force rebalance servo that results in the generation of a time varying voltage in the output of the force rebalance servo that corresponds to a magnitude of the net positive spring of the combined flexure suspension and electrostatic springs acting on the proofmass. The system also comprises a negative electrostatic spring servo that applies a negative electrostatic spring DC voltage to each of a pair of negative electrostatic forcer electrodes.

Bias reduction in force rebalanced accelerometers

An accelerometer system can include a sensor element comprising first and second proofmasses, the first proofmass accelerating in a first direction and the second proofmass accelerating in a second direction opposite the first direction in response to an external acceleration. A force rebalance controller applies control signals to at least one control element to provide a first force to accelerate the first proofmass toward a first null position and to at least one control element to provide a second force to accelerate the second proofmass toward a second null position. The force rebalance controller can also generate opposite polarity first and second output signals associated with respective displacements of the first and second proofmasses relative to the respective first and second null positions. An acceleration component calculates the external acceleration based on the first and second output signals.

Accelerometer systems and methods

The method and apparatus in one embodiment may have: providing a two-dimensional oscillator having a beam containing two principal elastic axes and two principal damping axes; driving the beam with drive components to oscillate across corners of the beam at approximately 45 degrees to sides of the beam, the drive components having forcer components that provide drive and pickoff components that provide feedback; and oscillating the beam in a normal mode and a reverse mode.

In one implementation, a chamber is selected that accommodates an array of die structures that comprises one or more cavities. An inner chamber of the chamber is maintained at a first temperature. An alkali metal source of the chamber is maintained at a second temperature greater than the first temperature. The one or more cavities of the array of die structures are filled with a portion of the alkali metal source. The method and apparatus in one embodiment may have: operating one of two resonators of a class II coriolis vibratory gyro in a closed loop mode and another of the two resonators in an open loop whole angle mode; sensing an angular rate by each of the two resonators; calibrating the scale factor of the closed loop resonator to yield the same integrated whole angle as measured by the open loop resonator; reversing operation of the two resonators such that the one of two resonators is operated in an open loop mode and the another of the two resonators in a closed loop whole angle mode; and alternately proceeding between open and closed loop operation of the two resonators, thereby self-calibrating scale factors respectively of the two resonators.

One embodiment is a micro hemispheric resonator gyro having: a plurality of pickoff and forcer electrodes; a hemispheric resonator; a guard ring having first and second opposed sides, the guard ring containing the plurality of pickoff and forcer electrodes, and the hemispheric resonator; a top cover operatively coupled to the first side of the guard ring; and a bottom cover operatively coupled to the second side of the guard ring; wherein the plurality of pickoff and forcer electrodes, the hemispheric resonator, the guard ring, the top cover and the bottom cover form a micro hemispheric resonator gyro.
