Inhibitors for the endoprotease furin are provided for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and study of human and animal pathologies, which involve furin activity. These pathologies include infections caused by bacteria and virus that exploit host furin activity. These pathologies also include diseases that involve the expression of host proproteins that are processed by furin as a part of growth, development, and maintenance of the host organism including certain cancers of the head and neck.

Furin inhibitors

An angled germicidal lamp is used to illuminate a coil and drain pan for optimum energy utilization. In one embodiment, a variable angled mount is used for positioning a germicidal lamp at a desired angle at the time of installation. In a second embodiment, a fixed angled mount is used for installation where the desired angle of mounting is known prior to installation. The angled germicidal lamp may be used with any coil installation, including flat, tilted and A-coils. For A-coil installations, a preformed delta plate is provided to ease installation.

A class of cysteine protease inhibitors which inactivate a cysteine protease by covalently bonding to the protease and releasing a heterocyclic leaving group is presented. The cysteine protease inhibitors of the present invention comprise a first portion which targets a desired cysteine protease and positions the inhibitor near the thiolate anion portion of the active site of the protease, and a second portion which covalently bonds to the cysteine protease and irreversibly deactivates that protease by providing a carbonyl or carbonyl-equivalent which is attacked by the thiolate anion of the active site of the cysteine protease to sequentially cleave a heterocyclic leaving group. The heterocyclic leaving group of the protease inhibitor is of the formula: &mdash;O&mdash;Het, where Het is a heterocycle having 4-7 atoms in the ring, with at least one of the heterocycle atoms being N, O or S.

Cysteine protease inhibitors containing heterocyclic leaving groups

Cysteine protease inhibitors which deactivate the protease by covalently bonding to the cysteine protease and releasing the enolate of a 1,3-dicarbonyl (or its enolic form). The cysteine protease inhibitors of the present invention accordingly comprise a first portion which targets a desired cysteine protease and positions the inhibitor near the thiolate anion portion of the active site of the protease, and a second portion which covalently bonds to the cysteine protease and irreversibly deactivates that protease by providing a carbonyl or carbonyl-equivalent which is attacked by the thiolate anion of the active site of the cysteine protease to sequentially cleave a .beta.-dicarbonyl enol ether leaving group.

Cysteine protease inhibitors effective for in vivo use

The present invention comprehends the provision of a fluid tight holding chamber which accumulates solution from the vial that aspirates during mixing or drawing fluid from the vial or is pressured out of the syringe upon extraction of the cannula from the vial. The holding chamber is defined in conjunction with the vial septum by a shield cap that surrounds and seals to the neck of the vial. The shield cap defines a guide for the cannula of the syringe and directs the cannula through a sealing member, the holding chamber, the septum and into the vial. One aspect of the invention provides a sleeve portion on the shield cap that receives and retains the syringe barrel. An arm is provided on the sleeve portion and has a notch that holds the syringe barrel in a predetermined position during shipment and storage of the assembly.

Anti-aerosoling drug reconstitution device

A modular, foraminous ground cover for constructing custom floricultural grounds displays. Pre-shaped, fiberglass ground cover subassembly modules are provided with a plurality of discretely placed foramens which will accommodate therein the placement of seedlings or plants. The foramens are of varied sizes, with the larger susceptible of diminishment, during planting and plant growth and, enlargeable at harvest time. The subassembly modules are joinable to one another by tongue-in-groove margins that are straight edges interior of a display assembly; the outer border of the display is reinforced and is defined as its periphery. Where required for strength and pest protection, a flexible planar strip is attachable to the display periphery reinforcement and serves as an in-ground footing and rodent barrier.

Horticultural layout ground cover assembly

A liquid dielectric having a surface that is contacted by an end of an electrode so as to form a contact area between the electrode and dielectric liquid wherein said area is limited thereby providing a contact resistance that is large compared to the rest of the electrode and dielectric liquid. Current through the contact area causes local heating of the electrode at the contact and raises its temperature toward the melting point of the electrode. Heating causes an increase in resistance of the electrode region so that the area of contact can be increased further immersion of the electrode. The contact area becomes a high-energy region where high energy reactions can be sustained such as fusion and the erosion of the electrode to generate powder having a very fine particle size. When the intention is to generate powders, compounds may be dissolved in the liquid containing elements that combine with the eroding surface of the electrode to provide particles having a stoichimetric ration that depends on the concentration of the dissolved compound. In this manner, finely divided particles of Ba Ferrite are generated using an iron electrode and Barium Hydroxide dissolved in water.

A compound for detecting the presence of specific microorganisms wherein the compound is made of two molecule fragments connected with a peptide bond, one compound fragment being enzyme-specific in that the presence of an enzyme specific to the microorganisms being detected will cause the peptide bond to hydrolyze, and the other molecule fragment being 6-aminoquinalone, wherein the organism is detected by exposing the compound to fluid suspected to contain the microorganism and irradiating the thus-exposed compound with ultraviolet radiation whereby fluorescence is observed if the microorganism is present.

Composition, article and process for detecting a microorganism

A bracelet assembly for carrying identification information. The bracelet assembly has an elongated flexible band with fastening means for fastening the band in a closed loop fashion around a patient's limb. There is a transparent portion on the flexible band through which the user can read the identification information. A permanently deformable layer is interposed between the transparent portion and a base layer. The base layer and permanently deformable layer are of contrasting colors. The permanently deformable layer is deformed by lines of force applied by mechanical pressure means such as a typewriter or credit card imprinter which deforms the deformable layer along the lines of force which correspond to the identification information. This renders the base layer visible through both the transparent portion and the permanently deformable layer along the lines of pressure.
